The post is full-time and is part of the Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) Team. The successful applicants will join a busy General Hospitals treating a large range of patients following SDEC specified pathways.

This is a fixed term contract for 12 months from starting date. Please note the successful candidate will work in the ED prior to working in the SDEC unit to understand pathways.

Duties of the post

The primary duties of the post are to see new patients within the Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) and Emergency Department, a team of Senior Clinical Decision Makers (SDM) are present on the clinical shop floor to provide support and clinical supervision 24 hours a day. ED Consultants' presence, supervision and support are available from 0800-2000 in SDEC and 0800-2200 in ED every day.

General Characteristics of the post

The post is full-time and is essentially within the Same Day Emergency Care Unit at QEH for the contract duration, with potential to rotate to the Emergency Department if the service needs allow.

Rota pending, applicants who perform satisfactorilymay be given a further period of 12 months within the Same Day Emergency Care and Emergency Department.

The successful applicant will work in a EWTD compliant rota, working shifts across 7 days including days, weekends and bank holidays.

The QEH site opened in March 2001. Although still fairly new, rising demand has meant that we are looking at way to expand and redevelop the department. The ED at QEH is amongst one busiest in London, seeing in excess of 160,000 new patients annually.The SDEC Unit is for those patients who can be seen, treated and discharged on the same day as arrival to hospital. The workload provides an opportunity to see a wide variety of acute medical and surgical problems.

Training Opportunities

The hospital site has excellent educations facilities and libraries with many major journals, Medline, computerised library research, internet and intranet. There is excellent audio-visual equipment in the hospital education centre.

Although this is not a recognised training post, the post holder will be required to participate in education and teaching activities on the unit.

There is an ED training programme held at the hospital. This constitutes a large investment in training facilitating each doctor to acquire the knowledge and skills required in Emergency Medicine. This training will include lecture-room teaching, clinical supervision, attendances at relevant courses, and simulation sessions. Special focus is given towards the passing of the Membership of the College of Emergency Medicine examinations (MCEM)

Annual Leave

Annual leave entitlement is 27 days per annum.

Study Leave

Study leave and funding is discretionary and not a right. It is discretionary to your requirements and service provision subject to departmental approval. The entitlement is 10 days per annum or pro rata for less than 12-month fixed term contracts. The course must be relevant to professional development and maintaining revalidation. Mandatory training must be up to date to be eligible.

GMC registration and licence to Practice is a condition of appointment and the onus is on the employee to maintain registration.
