One post for a Consultant in Trauma & Orthopaedics is advertised in general and complex trauma witha special interest in foot & ankle to complement the current consultants in the Orthopaedic Departmentwithin Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. The successful candidate would join the existing team ofnine consultants at University Hospital Lewisham and ten consultants at Queen Elizabeth HospitalWoolwich. Elective work is to be carried out at the Lewisham site.The appointment (10PAs) will be made in accordance with the 2003 Consultant Terms and Conditions.The post holder will be expected to provide regular trauma sessions and be involved in audit andclinical governance as required. The post holder will participate in a 1:9 on call rota supported by a fulljunior doctor team.The successful candidate will join a team of hard-working and enthusiastic Trauma and Orthopaedicconsultants. We believe this new post will provide time, support and recognition for well-trainedindividuals to develop their clinical and teaching skills, and to deliver excellent patient care.
Main duties of the job
3. General Description of the PostIntroductionThis post will be for a consultant in Trauma & Orthopaedics, with expertise in complex trauma and foot and anklesurgery. The post will be for 10 PAs. On-call cover will be based at University Hospital Lewisham covering a 1 in9 on-call rota for weekends and non-resident nights. Daytime elective work can be scheduled at both hospitalsites, but is almost always undertaken at the Lewisham hospital site due to the number of operating theatres onthis site. Trauma activity can be scheduled at both sites.Proven competency in trauma and lower limb surgery will be required. This post is important to the Trust to ensurethe continuation of our excellent and busy Orthopaedic Service and support the 18-weeks target.The successful candidates would join the existing team of 20 substantive consultants at Lewisham and GreenwichNHS Trust.The appointment will be made in accordance with the 2003 Consultant Terms and Conditions of Service. Thepost holder will be expected to provide regular trauma sessions and to participate in clinical governance andteaching activity. Opportunities for getting involved in NHS leadership will also be made available.

Duties of post1. The post holder will participate in the Consultant led trauma service to maintain ahigh quality trauma service with Consultant involvement in early operative work andfracture clinic supervision. The appointee would be encouraged to further developand update skills in the acute management of complex fractures and themanagement of a foot & ankle service.2. Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust serves a young sporty population and thereferrals of sports related and soft tissue problems are also increasing. Thecandidate will be expected to be competent in managing these patients.3. The post holder will be required to adopt a continuing responsibility for the care ofpatients in his/her charge in partnership with other consultant colleagues.4. He/she will be expected to fully participate in the teaching activities of theDirectorate.5. For the purpose of management and use of resources, he/she will be accountableto the Clinical Director of Orthopaedics and work closely with the Service Manager.6. He/she will share in the Directorates management and administrativeresponsibilities.7. The post holder undertakes, exceptionally, to perform additional duties inoccasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.8. The appointee will be responsible for the professional supervision andmanagement of junior staff and participate in their appointment with otherConsultants.9.
