Job summary

The posts are full-time, based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Woolwich site (QEH),one of the main hospital sites of Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust (LGT).Successful applicants can choose to work either as fixed term (4-12 months) orsubstantively. Candidates will work in 4-month blocks and can express a preferenceas to which departments they work for across the divisions of Acute, Emergency andSpecialist Medicine, we will endeavour to accommodate candidate's specialtyrequests as much as possible but cannot guarantee this.

There is the option for some posts to be 80:20 clinical: educational or 80:20 clinicaland managerial, to allow time for undergraduate education or managementdevelopment. This can be discussed at interview.

Main duties of the job

  • Medical management of inpatients on a General Medicine ward, and out of hours includes general and acute medical wards.
  • Providing day to day cover for the wards and units they are directly assigned to, as an integral member of a consultant-led team. This includes review of new patients, follow-up of investigations and treatment and overseeing the day to day management of patients within these wards and units, attending Consultant ward rounds and participating in multi-disciplinary meetings, maintaining accurate, complete and legible notes, prescribe medicines in the drug chart and issuing timely discharge letters / e-discharges and discharge medications (TTO's) to promote good liaison with General Practitioners.
  • Liaison and communication with other Medical and Surgical Units and other disciplines within the hospital. liaise with patients' relations Participation in the General Medical on-call rota to provide cover for colleagues in an emergency and when on annual / study leave
  • Attending all training opportunities provided by the department. Opportunities will be available to plan and organise own continuing medical education within financial resources available.
  • To take active part in all aspects Clinical Governance.

Within the Emergency Department:

The successful candidate will work in a EWTD compliant full shift rota covering average of less than 48 hours including three hours of paid teaching and study time per week and on duty for approximately 1 in 3 weekends and approximately the equivalent of 4 nights per month. There is no on-call responsibility.

A team of Senior Clinical Decision makers are present on the clinical shop floor to provide support and clinical supervision 24 hours a day. ED Consultants presence, supervision and support are available from 0800 to 2200 every day.

Within the Medical Department:

The successful candidate can work in one of several medical specialties, depending on the needs of the applicant and demands of the department. Participation in the general medical on-call rota is optional. We can provide experience in gastroenterology, frailty, respiratory, neurology, diabetes and endocrine, acute medicine or haematology/oncology.

All posts are supervised by a specialist consultant. There is regular teaching that the successful applicant will be able to attend.
