Job summary

We are looking for enthusiastic and committed Emergency Department nurses who are ready to undertake the challenge of Band 6 working in a busy and fast paced ED.

Our department encompasses a 7-bedded Resuscitation area, 20 bedded Majors area, an Ambulatory Majors area and a new integrated Urgent Treatment Centre.

We serve a large and diverse local population with a wide variety of health needs.

Main duties of the job

Job Summary:

1. Accountable to the ED Matrons

2. To provide quality nursing assessment and care for patients presenting to the ED. To effectively provide daily management and co-ordination of individual areas of the ED.

3. To contribute to the support and guidance of junior members of nursing staff within the ED.

Role of Department

To receive, assess and treat patients involved in an accident or having an acute illness, prior to hospital admission or discharge back into the community.

To provide a suitable working environment for all members of staff where patients receive a high standard of care, and which is conducive to the education and development of nursing and medical staff wishing to specialise or gain experience in Emergency care.

To accept patients referred by their General Practitioner to the on-call teams for urgent assessment, and when appropriate admission.

Clinical Responsibilities:

Actively participate in the delivery of care.

Care for patients with regard to their individual care needs whilst maintaining patient dignity and confidentiality in accordance with the NMC code of conduct

Practise and promote nursing care to the highest standard in accordance with the Trusts policies, procedures and the NMC Code of Conduct, and fulfil PREP requirements.

Establish a supportive and organised working environment conducive to the well being of patients and carers.

Develop, promote and maintain effective communication and working relationships with all members of the multi-disciplinary team, patients and carers.

Practise in a professional manner at all times, acting as a role model and resource for peers and junior colleagues whilst offering support and leadership.

Determine nursing priorities and plan patient care according to staff availability.

Inform Nurse in Charge or Matron when changes occur in circumstances which affect the delivery of care.

Having regard to the workload of, and the pressures on colleagues, inform the Nurse in Charge or Matron if these are seen to jeopardise safe standards of practise.

Ensure that safe lifting and handling techniques are employed.

Ensure that all clinical and legal documents completed are both accurate and legible and that the nurses understand the relevance and confidentiality of their nature.

Promote the provision of a customer-orientated service.

The use of standard infection control precautions is mandatory for all staff to prevent or minimize the spread of microorganisms and communicable diseases to patients, staff and surrounding community.

Perform an expanded role of duties including Phlebotomy, IV cannulation, suturing and plastering etc.

Be familiar with the Major Incident Plan and own role within it.

Ability to demonstrate competently in all extended Emergency nursing roles such as plastering, wound closure and cannulation skills.

Be familiar with the major Incident Plan and in the event of a Major Incident and in the absence of a senior colleague assume the role of the Nurse in Charge

Managerial Responsibilities:

Ensure that Trust and Departmental Policies are followed, including sickness and absence, lateness, uniform and confidentiality.

Maintain the safety and well-being of patients and staff in accordance with the Health and Safety Policy and ensure that all accidents/incidents are reported and documented.

Support and contribute to changes in practice / policy which embrace the strategic direction of the NHS.

Deputise for the Nurse co coordinating specific areas of the department when appropriate.

Ensure the accurate collection of data in relation to patient activity, in order that statistics may be accurately compiled.

Assist in the investigation of complaints or incidents, according to Trust Policy.

Have regard for the ED budget and support the Senior Nursing team in relation to this, particularly with regard to use of equipment and products.

Actively participate in clinical and operational management of the department, being able to independently co-ordinate a given area of the ED.

Deputise for the Nurse in Charge of the department in their absence.

Educational Responsibilities:

Take responsibility for own professional growth, development and motivation, including participation in Clinical Supervision.

Act as a mentor/support for junior staff and students and ensure that learners allocated to the ED are given appropriate teaching, support and guidance in accordance with local objectives and continuous assessment.

To independently act as a practice Assessor for pre-registration students

Acts as a mentor / support for designated team of nurses, contributing to the provision of PDRs.

Lead as a link nurse for an area of Emergency nursing to act as an advocate to promote overall department knowledge and patient care.
