Consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedics (sub speciality hip and knee)

Job responsibilities

a. Clinical Responsibilities

The Consultant will be required to assist management and its agents during investigations into claims alleging medical negligence and where requested, to provide related factual statements.

The post holder will participate in the Consultant led trauma service to maintain a high quality trauma service with Consultant involvement in early operative work and fracture clinic supervision. The appointee would be encouraged to further develop and update skills in the acute management of complex fractures and the management of a lower limb service.

The post holder will be required to adopt a continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his/her charge in partnership with other consultant colleagues.

He/she will be expected to fully participate in the teaching activities of the Directorate.

For the purpose of management and use of resources, he/she will be accountable to the Clinical Director of Orthopaedics and work closely with the Service Manager.

He/she will share in the Directorates management and administrative responsibilities.

The post holder undertakes, exceptionally, to perform additional duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.

The appointee will be responsible for the professional supervision and management of junior staff and participate in their appointment with other Consultants.

The appointee will be expected to participate in postgraduate teaching of medical staff and undergraduates attached to the Trust and in the training of all grades of staff.

The appointee will participate on a regular basis in the process of Clinical Audit within the department and take on the audit role for the department. The appointee will be expected to attend department and divisional clinical governance meetings as requested.

He/she will be required to maintain an on-call commitment and to provide prospective cover for colleagues on a mutually agreed basis in respect of absence from duty. He/she will be expected to co-operate in the present agreed framework of the directorate management structure arrangements.

b. Medical Education & Teaching

This post will be expected to participate in Audit, teaching of Undergraduates, Postgraduates, Nursing and Allied Health Professionals.

The successful candidate will be encouraged to participate in continuing postgraduate medical education by attending conferences and training courses as required by the RCS.

The Department of Orthopaedic surgery has developed a strong commitment to teaching and training. There are daily trauma teaching meetings so as to plan the treatment of emergency patients for the day. We participate actively in South East Thames Orthopaedic training and have designated weekly teaching sessions for the junior doctors in the department.

c. Clinical Audit and Clinical Governance

A multi-disciplinary audit is conducted on a monthly basis, led by a designated consultant responsible for audit

Responding to written complaints in a timely manner

Participating in investigations of red incidents and serious incidents

Leading on investigating a serious incident every 3 years, from outside of trauma and orthopaedics, with appropriate support from specialty representatives and the divisional governance team

d. Continuing Professional Development

Participate in continuing professional development at local and national level

Implement audit and research findings as appropriate in clinical practice

Prepare and participate in an annual appraisal in accordance with Trust policy

A willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional or national levels

e. Policy, Planning and Management

Support the Trust to deliver quality patient care

Contribute to the development of clinical and organisational protocols and guidelines

Assist in the development of the Annual Service Plan for the Directorate and Division and participate in the strategic planning of the service

Comply with all Trust policies

Qualifications

Essential

• Full General Medical Council registration with License to Practice
• Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via: - CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview) - CESR, or - European Community Rights
• Primary medical qualification
• An appropriate higher Trauma and Orthopaedic surgical qualification e.g. FRCS (Tr. & Orth.) or equivalent
• Formal fellowship training in hip and knee
• Formal fellowship training in trauma

Desirable

• Post graduate degree e.g. MD, PhD

Clinical Experience

Essential

• Clinical expertise in General Orthopaedics including clinical experience in a Major Trauma Centre
• Broad experience in the management of general skeletal trauma
• Logbook verified competence of independently performed lower limb surgery including arthroplasty
• Good practical clinical skills
• Evidence of ability to make decisions at consultant level and to manage complex clinical problems
• Experience of non-specialist children's trauma and orthopaedic surgery

Desirable

• Consultant level clinical experience in the NHS of Trauma & Orthopaedics

Clinical Audit

Essential

• Understanding of principles of audit
• Evidence of previous audit
• Evidence of teaching juniors, medical students and other health care professionals

Desirable

• Registered with the GMC as a recognised trainer
• Attendance at formal teaching courses
• Attendance at the TAiP course (Royal College of Surgeons).

Management and Administrative Experience

Essential

• An understanding of management in the context of the Health Service.
• Evidence of contribution to safety systems / processes, including experience of Serious Incident investigations
• Ability to respond to a formal written complaint

Desirable

• Previous experience in NHS management or leadership (e.g. as a Clinical Lead, Governance Lead)
• Conflict management training

Research Experience

Essential

• Research Publication in a peer reviewed journal within the last 24 months
• International Presentation within the last 24 months
• Evidence of continued research activity portfolio built since qualification from medical school

Desirable

• Research prizes, awards or medals
• Experience as a journal editor or peer reviewer
• Experience as invited faculty for Trauma & Orthopaedics conferences internationally
