Job summary

This post is for a 6 months contract Trust Doctor (ST3 and above) in Trauma and Orthopaedics at Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. At the end of the 6 months there is a possibility of 6 months extension after successful review. The post will be allocated to an orthopaedic consultant supporting the clinic, theatre and trauma. The post holder will be supporting the junior doctor team on a daily basis.

Main duties of the job

The Orthopaedic Department enjoys a close relationship with our surgical and medical colleagues; aparticular feature are the dedicated Orthogeriatric beds on a Care of the Elderly Ward for orthopaedicemergency admissions managed by a Care of the Elderly Physician in conjunction with theOrthopaedic Team.The department works closely with Rheumatology, the Pain Team and our PCT colleagues indeveloping new pathways to improve patient access into secondary care, e.g. Carpal Tunnels andMusculo-Skeletal pathways for Upper Limb, Lower Limb and Back Pain. Lewisham Hospital has beenawarded the contract to provide a community based musculo skeletal interface service.

The orthopaedicdepartment looks after the weekly lower limb clinics as part of the MSK service.There are daily Day Case and In-patient theatre lists, fracture clinics and trauma lists. We comparevery well with our peers on average length of stay for elective surgery and we continue to convert inpatient work into Day Case surgery and the Trust is currently 4th in England for Day Case Rates. Boththe OPD and fracture clinics are conducted in a designated area and are very busy. There are twodedicated theatres with laminar flows for both in-patient and outpatient elective work and a third inwhich trauma surgery is undertaken.This post is important to the Trust to ensure the continuation of our excellent and busy OrthopaedicService and support the 18-weeks target.Elective patients are admitted to a dedicated Orthopaedic Ward in the Riverside Building, which hasstrict admission criteria. This has enabled the Trust to maximize our workload as our cancellationrates are very low whilst ensure that infection rates are minimised. Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered with GMC
  • Registered medical qualification

Desirable

  • MRCS
  • Relevant postgraduate qualification
  • ALS/ ATLS provider

Clinical Experience

Essential

  • Significant experience in Surgical specialties that should include at least 2 years Orthopaedic experience
  • Basic Orthopaedic surgical skills
  • Middle grade on call covering Orthopaedic emergencies

Desirable

  • Work experience for 12 months in UK
  • Experience in specialties other than, but relevant to Orthopaedic Surgery

Clinical Audit

Essential

  • Record of completed audit projects

Desirable

  • An understanding of Clinical Governance and its application to patient care in surgical ward and Orthopaedics in A&E, outpatients
