Job summary
Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust are looking to appoint a substantive Consultant Paediatrician with an interest in allergy to provide clinical support to the Paediatric Assessment Unit (PAU) at Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) Woolwich. The post holder will have responsibility to deliver a general paediatric service and manage a clinical caseload. The successful post holder will work on the Hippo Paediatric Ambulatory Unit providing same day care to children as well as regular paediatric allergy clinics.
There is no overnight commitment and no NICU cover is expected. The postholder will provide 1 allergy clinic a week, perform allergy triage and an alternate week general paediatric clinic. The postholder will join a team of 17 Consultant Paediatricians covering a wide range of specialities, who cover both the general and neonatal units, as well as providing some cover for the PAU. The general paediatricians are currently on call 1 in 8, including weekends.
Main duties of the job
This is a consultant post in general paediatrics at Lewisham & Greenwich NHS Trust providing clinic support to the Paediatric Assessment Unit. There is the opportunity to have a sub-speciality interest in paediatric allergy depending on the post holder's qualifications. Clinical Responsibilities of this post
- Together with the other paediatricians, to provide a service for children on the QEH site in acute general and neonatal paediatrics. This includes all aspects of treatment and relevant management duties for the proper functioning of the department as per the job plan.
- Shared responsibility with the other General Paediatricians for providing 24 hour, 7 day a week cover for the Unit on a rota basis. Responsible also for covering colleagues periods of annual leave and short-term sickness.
- To be aware of and deal with safeguarding issues as required, and manage patients with advice from the safeguarding team
- Carry out outpatient duties with appropriate administration and patient follow up
- Be aware of and assist in divisional objectives through clinical work e.g. Electronic discharges within 24 hours, DNA rates, infection control
- Standard operating procedure of consultant responsibilities is currently being finalised
Non-clinical Responsibilities
Medical Education & Teaching
- Participate in medical student and junior doctor (all grades) teaching, clinical and seminar format especially within the clinical forum
- Participate in nurse teaching as appropriate.
- Undertake monitoring and appraisal of junior staff within everyday practice and take part as educational supervisor (with appropriate training).
Clinical Audit and Clinical Governance
- Individual contribution to divisional governance programme will be expectedInvolvement in audit projects and supervision of junior staff in audit projects is possible and will be encouraged in this pos
Continuing Professional Development
- participate in continuing professional development at local and national level
- implement audit and research findings as appropriate in clinical practice
- prepare and participate in an annual appraisal in accordance with Trust policy
- undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional or national levels as agreed with the Clinical or Divisional Directo

- Medical degree, MBBS or equivalent
- MRCP/MRCPCH or equivalent
- Full and Specialist registration (and with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC) or be eligible for registration within six months of interview.
- Applicants that are UK trained, must also be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview.
