Job summary

A rare opportunity to join a highly renowned multidisciplinary voice clinic team (nationally and internationally) and to deal with a huge spectrum of patients with voice disorders and functional swallowing disorders. The team is known for the very high quality of service they provide, multiple research publications, outstanding professional support and clinical development. The clinic was among the first voice clinics to be established in the UK (1984) and has been providing an exemplary diagnostic and interventional skills to a wide range of voice disorders since. It continues to be a leading service in the field of voice with the team speaking regularly in national and international conferences, as well as participating in shaping the guidelines for managing voice disorders and developing clinical skills for voice professionals.

Main duties of the job

To lead on and provide a highly specialist input to voice disordered patients presenting with voice disorders arising from a wide range of aetiologies in outpatient setting. The role includes second opinions specialist advice, teaching other osteopaths and professionals and supervising students. It also involves responsibilities in service development and maintaining quality of care as well as clinical governance responsibility for the area

To work to national and locally implemented clinical and professional guidelines such as the General Osteopathic Council guidelines for practice

To be accountable for own professional action and recognise own professional boundaries through interpretation of clinical/professional policies.

To maintain advanced clinical skills within the specialisms of ENT and to maintain accurate and contemporaneous records of ongoing professional development. To attend relevant advanced training and development courses, clinical supervision and short courses, in order to maintain highly specialist skills.

To provide formal and informal training, supervision, second opinions, advice and support to less senior osteopaths within the clinical areas of ENT and to participate in appraisal of these members of staff under the direction of the Lead ENT Consultant.

Job description

Job responsibilities

To provide highly specialist voice osteopathy assessment and to implement highly specialist treatment for outpatients presenting with voice disorders with impaired muscular behaviour.

To be involved in developing policies, practice and service in the clinical area of Voice in conjunction with the multi-disciplinary voice team, reporting to the lead consultant of the voice service.

To be able to coordinate and attend the multidisciplinary voice clinics.

To provide supervision, support and advice to junior osteopath colleagues and to contribute to the appraisal process, in liaison with the multidisciplinary voice team.

To participate in clinical governance, audit and projects within the multidisciplinary voice service, reporting directly to the Lead ENT Consultant

To complement the process of diagnosis whereby the Laryngologist examines the state of the vocal folds the speech therapist assesses vocal function and the osteopath assesses the state of muscle and joins function in the jaw, larynx, breathing mechanism, and posture related voice problem.

To independently manage a complex caseload of patients who suffer high level of Muscle Tension Disorders as associated symptoms in Dysphonia, Dysphagia Globus and other ENT related disorders. This includes highly specialist assessment, diagnosis, therapy and management of the caseload and timely and effective Multi-Disciplinary liaison. To carry out clinical duties ensuring patients dignity is respected.

To liaise with speech and language therapists in management of non-compliant none responsive patients.

To apply acquired knowledge and skills specific to voice osteopathy with high level of specialism in the field of voice disorders, negotiating therapy goals with patients and the multi-disciplinary team for assessments.

To take detailed case histories and employ a wide range of formal, informal and manual palpatory assessments.

To develop and implement highly specialist care packages for patients with voice disorders, including highly developed counselling skills.

To manage and prioritise referrals and waiting lists for ENT.

To participate in the running of the Multi-disciplinary Voice Clinic at University Hospital Lewisham and to contribute to the diagnosis and treatment planning of patients attending these clinic.

To contribute in the service development and audit of the Voice Clinic at University Hospital Lewisham.

To provide advice on voice osteopathy to non-specialist and other specialists/professionals within clinical field.

To maintain accurate and evaluative patient records in line with departmental guidelines.
