Fibro Scan Technician (Part-Time 15-hours per week)

Job summary

We are excited to introduce this new role at Guys and St Thomas. The FibroScan Technician will play a key role in delivering non-invasive liver assessments using transient elastography (FibroScan) technology within the GMS Directorate. Working under the supervision of the nursing and medical clinical team, the post holder will support the early detection and monitoring of liver disease through the use of FibroScan, contributing to improved patient outcomes and more streamlined diagnostic pathways.

On a day-to-day basis, the post holder will work in the outpatient setting alongside the GMS team to ensure that the FibroScan service is delivered effectively within available resources, meeting specified activity levels and maintaining high standards of quality.

A CPD course in Fibroscan Operator Training is essential. Experience in performing FibroScan assessments is desirable. However, full training will be provided for a successful candidate who does not have prior experience. Previous experience working within a healthcare setting is essential.

Experience in working in the liver speciality is an advantage.

Main duties of the job

  • Perform FibroScan assessments independently, ensuring accurate, reliable, and high-quality results in accordance with local and national protocols.

  • Prepare patients for the procedure, clearly explaining the process and addressing any questions or concerns, demonstrating excellent communication skills at all times.

  • Record FibroScan results accurately on EPIC and ensure all patient data is documented in a timely manner.

  • Maintain responsibility for the care, organisation, and routine maintenance of the FibroScan machine, including calibration of probes in line with manufacturer guidelines and NHS protocols.

  • Ensure infection prevention and control measures, as well as patient safety standards, are upheld at all times.

  • Work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team, communicating clearly and professionally with consultants, Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNSs), administrative staff.

  • Identify and contact appropriate patients using hospital systems, using effective communication to support engagement and attendance.

  • Manage and prioritise own caseload in a proactive and efficient manner.

  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date records and ensure timely reporting to clinicians and management.

  • Participate in ongoing training and development to maintain competency and support continuous service improvement.

  • Support health promotion activities to raise awareness of liver disease.
