Job summary
These Post-CCT Fellowship posts in Sub-specialty Anaesthesia are designed for anaesthetists who have completed their training and are seeking to consolidate their transition to consultant practice while developing advanced expertise in a defined sub-specialty area.

Fellows will work within one of the UK's largest and most academically productive anaesthetic departments, gaining exposure to complex, high-volume tertiary practice.
Previous fellows have successfully progressed to substantive consultant appointments within the Theatre, Anaesthesia and Peri-operative Medicine (TAP) directorate, or have leveraged the fellowship experience to secure senior posts in other leading centres. These roles are ideal for individuals seeking to refine their clinical identity, build academic or educational portfolios, and position themselves competitively for long-term consultant careers.
Main duties of the job
The successful applicant will spend a minimum of 50% of their job-planned time working within their chosen sub-specialty area. This time will be tailored to the fellowship focus and will include specialist clinical activity, with opportunities to integrate research, education, and teaching aligned to the sub-specialty.
The remaining 50% of job-planned time will be dedicated to delivering anaesthesia at consultant level, contributing to the wider service according to departmental need and the post-holder's expertise. As experience and confidence develop, there may be scope to increase the service component within the specialist area, including independently running lists where appropriate.
On-call commitments are not mandatory but may be discussed by mutual agreement, depending on service requirements and the interests of the successful candidate. Job planning will be flexible and supportive, recognising both service delivery and professional development priorities.

The post-holder will typically spend approximately two days per week undertaking sub-specialty-directed clinical practice within their chosen fellowship area. Depending on experience and competence, this work will be carried out under direct or indirect supervision from an appointed Fellowship Lead and relevant Clinical Service Leads.
In addition to specialist clinical activity, the role includes active involvement in research, audit, quality improvement, education, and management projects, many of which extend beyond the theatre environment. Fellows are encouraged to contribute to departmental innovation, present work at local and national meetings, and support the training of junior doctors and multidisciplinary colleagues.
Appointments are offered on a fixed-term basis, commencing from August 2026, initially for six months, with the potential to extend up to 12 months by mutual agreement. Posts are based within the Guys and St Thomas NHS Foundation Trust footprint, with opportunities to work across sites in line with service needs and educational objectives.
This fellowship provides a structured, well-supported platform for developing advanced sub-specialty competence while functioning as a senior clinician within a high-performing, forward-thinking anaesthetic department.
