Job summary
The Specialty Doctor will provide specialist medical expertise within the Psychosexual Medicine Service, delivering high-quality, evidence-based care to patients with complex sexual dysfunctions. The role involves the autonomous medical assessment, investigation, and management of conditions at the intersection of physical, psychological, and relational health, working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team (MDT). The post-holder will be instrumental in supporting the clinical leadership of the service delivery and educational activities.
Main duties of the job
The Specialty Doctor is required to manage a caseload of clients presenting with a variety of sexual and relationship complaints. They are to assess and then provide ongoing psychosexual therapy to the individual or couple. When necessary they will refer on to other specialist disciplines or services in particular for medical advice or assessment. The post holder is to maintain client records and confidentiality. The post involves working both independently and also as part of a multi disciplinary team.

Assessment & Diagnosis: Conduct comprehensive initial and follow-up medical and psychiatric consultations, establishing differential diagnoses for a wide range of male, female, and couple psychosexual complaints.
Investigation: Appropriately request, interpret, and action results from diagnostic tests (e.g., hormonal profiles, vascular assessments, specialist imaging, endocrine screens) to exclude or confirm underlying organic pathology.
Treatment Implementation: Develop and oversee evidence-based pharmacological treatment plans, including prescribing and titration of phosphodiesterase inhibitors, hormonal replacement therapies, and addressing drug-induced sexual side effects, ensuring safe practice in line with established protocols.
Complex Case Management: Manage patients with significant medical and co-morbidities impacting sexual function (e.g., cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease etc).
Risk Management: Conduct specialist risk assessments pertaining to self-harm, safeguarding, and the interface of sexual difficulty with health and wellbeing.
Develop quality improvement and audit projects in keeping with hospital policies
Contribute towards developing, monitoring and reviewing the service including preparing reports as required
Ensure that all electronic records are completed fully with all relevant data documented
Ensure that appropriate quality assurance structures and governance are in place and any variations in the service delivery and need are raised with the Consultant/Clinical Lead and the Clinical Director immediately
Conform to the Trust incident reporting guidelines
Maintain an awareness of the ongoing changes in relation to Psychosexual Medicine practice
Undertake any training necessary to fulfil duties of the post, including mandatory training e.g. basic life support, fire training and data protection

- A Postgraduate Qualification in Psychosexual Medicine (e.g., Diploma or Membership in Psychosexual Medicine from the Institute of Psychosexual Medicine, or COSRT membership).
Desirable
- Minimum of 4 years full-time postgraduate medical experience (or equivalent), with at least 2 years experience in a relevant medical specialty (e.g.Sexual Health, Gynaecology, Urology).
