Job summary
The post holder will.
- Use technical equipment to safely draw blood from patients
- Explain the process of drawing blood clearly to a patient
- Reassure and calming patients who might be nervous or scared of the procedure
- Apply dressings to the wound created by drawing blood
- Register the blood and storing it in the correct environment
- Send blood samples to testing laboratories
- Maintain an organised and clean work area based on health and safety regulations and the guidelines of the Trust
- Answer patient questions regarding collection techniques and offering additional resources on the collection process, if the patient requests them
- Stock Keeping of supplies
Main duties of the job
The duties and responsibilities listed below are representative of a Phlebotomist
- Collecting Blood SamplesSafely and accurately draw blood from patients using venepuncture
- Verifying Patient IdentityConfirm patient details (name, date of birth, NHS number, etc.) to ensure correct sample collection and labelling.
- Preparing PatientsExplain procedures, provide reassurance, and ensure the patient is comfortable before drawing blood.
- Labeling and Handling SpecimensCorrectly label blood samples and ensure they are handled, stored, and transported according to protocol.
- Maintaining Equipment and SuppliesEnsure all phlebotomy equipment (needles, vacutainers, tourniquets, etc.) is clean, sterile, and ready for use.
- Infection Control and Safety ComplianceFollow infection control guidelines, wear appropriate PPE, and dispose of sharps and biohazard waste safely.
- Data Entry and Record KeepingAccurately record details of the sample collection, patient data, and time of draw in both paper and digital formats.
- Working with Healthcare TeamsCommunicate effectively with nurses, doctors, and lab technicians to ensure smooth workflow and accurate diagnostics.
- Monitoring Patient ReactionsObserve patients for adverse reactions (e.g., fainting, bleeding) during and after the procedure and respond appropriately.
- Continuing Professional Development (CPD)Stay updated with new techniques, safety protocols, and NHS or organisational policies related to phlebotomy.
