Job summary

The Children's Allergy Service is seeking a part time 0.8 wte clinical fellow in Paediatric Allergy to join a dynamic, enthusiastic and forward thinking team as a fixed term position for 12 months from Sept 2024 to Sept 2025. This post can be used by trainees as an Out of Programme Training post to use towards Allergy SPIN or Out of Programme Experience to gather experience prior to applying for Paediatric Allergy Subspeciality Training (GRID). It is also suitable for doctors post CCT who are wanting more experience in clinical paediatric allergy and it is suitable for all doctors as a standalone fellow post (subject to fulfilling the criteria to practice in the UK).

The department was founded in 2006 and has grown rapidly since and is now the largest of its kind in the UK. We are currently involved in many exciting initiatives and are looking for an individual with appropriate skills to complement this team and help keep the service in the forefront of clinical and academic excellence.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be expected to take anoperational role as Education Fellow in managing the Allergy Academy for 1 day per week. The Allergy Academy is the department's post-graduate teaching institute. The role involves interfacing between a wide range of clinical health professionals, opinion leaders, academic institutions and logistic experts. The emphasis of this role is on clinical and educational innovation, to enable quality improvement within both fields. An able candidate may wish to consider applying for a Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy as a post-graduate teaching qualification. This is an excellent opportunity to join a first class team in an active and progressive central London teaching hospital environment.

The post holder will also spend 3 days a week as a Clinical Fellow covering 3 general paediatric allergy outpatient clinics per week (new and follow up patients) and they will have involvement with the patient query rota jobs (prescribing drugs for day care challenges, patient queries, ward queries, day case reactions / queries and in triaging referrals). The successful candidate will have a clinical and educational supervisor from the consultant team.

About us

Children's Allergy Service

Until 2006, the Allergy Department saw a small number of children, supported by 2 honorary consultant Paediatricians. In 2006, in response to demands on the service and the new opportunities with the development of children's services, a department of Paediatric Allergy was formed. The new Children's Allergy Service is an integrated clinical and academic unit led by Professor Gideon Lack. The current team of Consultant Paediatric Allergists in the department comprises Prof Gideon Lack, Prof Adam Fox, Prof George du Toit, Prof Helen Brough, Dr Susan Chan, Dr Kate Swan, Prof Alexandra Santos, Dr Tom Marrs, Dr Elizabeth Powell and Dr Ru-Xin Foong.

The department is a National Sub-speciality training centre for trainees in Paediatric Allergy. In 2007 the service was chosen for inspection by the House of Lords Science and Technology Committee as an example of high quality specialist care. The Children's Allergy Service can be broadly divided into clinical and academic components although every effort has been made to ensure that the two elements of the service closely interlink.
