Job summary

Approximately 6000 children are seen in our outpatient clinics each year. New to follow-up ratio is approximately 1.7. Around 1800 children are seen each year as day cases for either food/drug provocation challenges, sublingual or subcutaneous immunotherapy. There is an increasing number of patients being seen for food oral immunotherapy (milk and peanut) and for complex drug challenges as well as omalizumab administration. Clinical referrals are a mix of GP, secondary and tertiary care referrals. Referral criteria include:

Immediate allergic reaction to food

Venom allergy

Eczema where food allergy is suspected

Allergic asthma

Drug allergy requiring further evaluation

Latex Allergy

Allergy reactions without a clear cause

Chronic/recurrent urticaria

Chronic Sinusitis

Acute urticaria where allergy is strongly suspected

Moderate to severe allergic rhinoconjunctivitis

GI symptoms (reflux, FTT, proctocolitis) where food allergy is suspected

Multiple atopic conditions (2 or more)

Immunotherapy for inhalant allergens if failed conventional medical treatment

Main duties of the job

Your job plan is anticipated to contain 4 Programmed Activities per week on average to be carried out on Guy's & St Thomas' site. There is no on-call commitment. This is an outline programme and you will be expected to discuss and agree a detailed job plan including your personal and professional objectives with your Head of Service within 3 months of your start date.

The Children's Allergy department was founded in 2006 and has grown rapidly since and is now the largest of its kind in the UK. We are currently involved in many exciting initiatives and are looking for an individual with appropriate skills to complement this team and help keep the service in the forefront of clinical and academic excellence.

The Department offers a wide and comprehensive range of services to children with allergic disorders. The new consultant will be expected to take an active role in recruitment to our research studies and cover the research challenges when on call for the day unit. They will also be able to develop and to participate in the teaching programs of the department.

This is an excellent opportunity to join a first class team, in a World Allergy Organisation Centre of Excellence, in an active and progressive central London teaching hospital environment.

Provide High Quality Care to Patients

To ensure patients are involved in decisions about their care and to respond to their views.

Research, Teaching and Training

Where possible to collaborate with academic and clinical colleagues to enhance the Trusts translational research portfolio, at all times meeting the full requirements of Research Governance.

To provide high quality teaching to medical undergraduates and members of other health care professions as required by the Clinical Director.

To take an active role in the work of the Allergy academy which provides post- graduate teaching and training.

To act as educational supervisor and appraiser as delegated by the Clinical Director to ensure external accreditation of training post.

Performance Management

To work with medical, nursing and managerial colleagues to ensure high performance in the following areas:

Clinical efficiency e.g. Immunotherapy response rates, DNA rates.

Quality of outcomes e.g. infection control targets, reducing re-admission rates.

Financial management e.g. identification, implementation and achievement of cost improvement programmes and participating in efforts to ensure services are provided cost effectively e.g. managing locum agency spend, monitoring and managing the drug budget to target, ensuring accuracy of clinical data for the team.

Operational efficiency e.g. day-case rates, waiting list activity and demand management.

Medical Staff Management

To work with colleagues to ensure junior doctors hours are compliant in line with EWTD and New Deal.

To ensure that adequate systems and procedures are in place to control and monitor leave for junior medical staff and to ensure that there is appropriate cover within the clinical areas, including on-call commitments

To participate in the recruitment of junior medical staff as and when required.

To participate in team objective setting as part of the annual job planning cycle.

To be responsible for the annual appraisal of all doctors in training, Trust doctors, Clinical Fellows and non-consultant grades as delegated by the Clinical Director/General Manager.

Governance

To review clinical outcomes in designated area using external benchmarking data where appropriate, to identify and advise variances to the Clinical Director.

Participate in clinical audit, incident reporting and analysis and to ensure resulting actions are implemented.

To work closely with the Directorate, Patient and Public Involvement panels in relation to clinical and services developments as delegated by the Clinical Director.

Participate in ensuring NICE requirements are reviewed and implemented and monitored in the specialty areas.

To ensure clinical guidelines and protocols are adhered to by junior medical staff and updated on a regular basis.

To keep fully informed about best practice in the specialty areas and ensure implications for practice changes are discussed with the Clinical Director.

To role model good practice for infection control to all members of the multidisciplinary team.

To both assure and promote good practice in relation to all aspects of clinical governance, working closely with the Lead for Quality and Patient experience.

Strategy and Business Planning

To participate in the business planning and objective setting process for the directorate and Trust where appropriate.
