We require an experienced and dedicated Senior Medical Technologist specialising in respiratory equipment to join our dynamic team at the Lane Fox Unit. In this critical role, you will be responsible for the maintenance, repair, and technical support of life-support equipment. You will be required to work closely with multidisciplinary teams to ensure the highest standards of patient care, contributing directly to the well-being of patients in both hospital and community settings.

We are inviting applications for a new Technologist to join the Technical Services team, working on a range of standard and specialist medical equipment with particular emphasis respiratory care.

You will have a scientific or engineering background, be able to demonstrate an ability to think logically and show a desire to work in a well-respected engineering team. We develop our staff with an emphasis on in-depth understanding, clinical application, supporting training and development.

Main duties of the job

  • To undertake routine servicing and maintenance of respiratory / ventilation equipment in both the Hospital and Community including satellite units. UK Full Driving Licence essential.
  • To ensure that repaired equipment is mechanically and electrically operational and safe by checking in accordance with Unit/ Department test procedures and policies.
  • To record defects in any equipment and report defects and repairs to appropriate officers and to ensure that unsatisfactory equipment is withdrawn from service.
  • To apply specified procedures when dealing with equipment which has been contaminated.
  • To maintain test and calibration equipment
  • To participate in an On-Call Rota.

About us

The Technical department provides a service to:-

The Lane Fox Respiratory Unit, consisting of 14 beds which provide invasive and non invasive management of chronic respiratory failure, The satellite unit also has a 20 bedded weaning unit that opened on the East Surrey Hospital site in October 2014. The service also supports a large population of patients in excess of 2600 using ventilation in the community.

Technical Support to the Evelina Hospital London Paediatric respiratory and ventilation service.

These are all supported with 24-hour technical back up with an On-Call service.

Job responsibilities

To undertake routine servicing and maintenance of respiratory / ventilation equipment. To ensure that repaired equipment is mechanically and electrically effective and safe by checking in accordance with Unit/ Department test procedures and policies. To report and record defects in any equipment including repairs to the appropriate officers and to ensure that non compliant equipment is withdrawn from service. To apply specified procedures when dealing with equipment which has been contaminated.

To maintain test and calibration equipment

To take part in on call duties.

Research and Development.

To aid in researching new equipment and projects in conjunction with medical and nursing staff. To evaluate / assess suitability of new equipment prior to purchase.

Training:

To participate and lead in-service training programs for medical staff, Nursing staff and junior Technologists .

To provide instruction on equipment provided for patients ,participating in the discharge of patients from the ward including the training of both the patients / relatives and carers in the correct use and care of the issued devices.

Where home installation are to be handed to other authorities to provide instruction to technical staff in operation adjustment and repair procedures.

To participate in Unit/Department/Trust mandatory training programs.

Services in Patients Home:

To identify equipment faults and undertake maintenance work on all medical equipment installed or provided by the Trust as per Unit/Departmental policies.

To transport necessary equipment to and from patients homes

To establish mechanical efficiency and electrical safety of equipment and to take action as appropriate

To install equipment in patients home

To operate Department / Trust vehicles under current guidelines

To keep secure and in good condition all Trust property supplied i.e. Vehicles, tools, test equipment, phones pagers etc.

To carry out such duties as may be required by the consultants or senior medical staff in the Lane Fox Unit.
