Job summary

Guy's and St Thomas' Radiology is part of the Clinical Imaging and Medical Physics Directorate and has multiple departments on both hospital sites including Evelina London Children's Hospital and the Guy's Cancer Centre. It has an asset base in excess of £40m including many state of the art imaging systems delivering in excess of 400,000 examinations PA. The department is strongly engaged in a transformational agenda to drive efficiency and quality but to also examine how imaging positively impacts on patient outcomes. The directorate is QSI accredited.

We support a wide range of Clinical Specialities and as well as offering Diagnostic Imaging, we perform Interventional and Therapeutic procedures using image guidance. The department also has significant research activity and a commitment to multidisciplinary training and education.

Main duties of the job

The duties and responsibilities of the post-holder require service delivery in a wide range of clinical environments as well as to a diversity of patient presentations.

Radiographers will be required to practice on both hospital sites and will involve lone working in particular specialties and at particular times.The service is delivered on a 24/7 basis and includes working in areas such as the Emergency Department, Theatres, General x-ray & fluoroscopy, Neonatal Unit and Intensive Care Units. Patient presentation willinclude the unconscious, uncooperative, incapacitated, incompetent, disorientated and those with physical and mental disabilities. A wide variety of patients will be encountered and will include those exhibiting antisocial or threatening behaviour.

The post holder will possess excellent inter-professional communication skills which will be essential for liaising with other radiographers, doctors, nurses, other allied health professionals and healthcare workersand administrative staff at all levels of seniority.

Other influencing factors include the skills needed to provide patients or relatives with empathy and emotional support for the bereaved, terminally ill, injured, traumatised or those altered by substanceuse/abuse.

Job responsibilities

Job outline:

To perform a range of diagnostic radiographic procedures, as required throughout the department, managing patient priority as appropriate.

The post-holder will work night shifts, weekends and bank holidays as part of their contracted hours.

To contribute to the delivery of an effective and responsive Radiology service.

To supervise, assist and train student radiographers and assistant staff in both the delivery of the service and their individual development needs.

To assist in and manage workflow and ensure all data inputs are recorded for both patient record integrity and statistical evaluation purposes.

To promote the highest professional and technical standards in all staff using personal example and constructive supervision.

Demonstrate partnership in professional development issues maintaining a high level of technical and theoretical skills through personal CPD.

To participate in the Governance of the Department in areas including Risk Management, Health and Safety, Research and Audit activities.

Clinical responsibilities:

To assess the clinical justification of Radiography referrals in line with both national regulations - IR(ME)R 2017 and local protocols.

To act with delegated authority as practitioner for plain film radiography referrals.

To act as an operator under IR(ME)R 2017.

To liaise with referral sources where clarification is required selection of the most clinically appropriate imaging.

To act as a point of advice for imaging referrers.

To act as a point of advice for patient enquiries.

To act as a patient advocate in radiation protection and safeguarding issues.

To assess specific communication needs of individual patients.

To acquire diagnostic images and physically position the full range of patient presentations accurately for examinations taking into account patient limitations and adapting standard techniques where necessary.

To ensure patients have agreed to exposure to Ionising Radiation prior to the examination.

To communicate effectively and empathetically with patients prior to, during and after an examination.

To communicate effectively and empathetically with relatives and carers of patients.

To review images and ensure that supplementary imaging procedures/views are considered prior to patient departure from the Department.

To ensure that images are presented for reporting purposes in a timely and accurate manner.

To ensure that urgent findings are communicated and patients are directed accordingly.

To flag radiographic abnormalities using the appropriate system of work in place, e.g., red dot.

To review and comment on continuing appropriateness of imaging protocols.

To ensure all appropriate infection control measures are utilised where necessary and paying particular attention to personal protection, as well as the management of equipment and linens.

To work night shifts, weekends and bank holidays as part of the 37.5 contracted hours per week.

To work unsupervised within the out of hours arrangements.

To undertake other duties as and when required by the demands of the service or the Head of Radiology Services.

Operational Responsibilities:

To liaise with other departments/wards within the hospital and various external sources in order to provide a quality service to patients and clinicians.

To effectively liaise with all disciplines of staff within the x-ray department giving support and advice where necessary.

To provide guidance to external users regarding the priority and deployment of radiographic resource, e.g., theatre usage.

To participate in the safe transfer of patients and equipment within the Department and Hospital respectively, using manual handling guidelines and risk assessment.

To communicate negotiated changes to staff rotas to Superintendent Radiographers.

To organise workload in line with clinical priorities.

To adapt and quickly respond to changes in service, patient or departmental need.

To carry and respond to paging systems out of hours.

To monitor and report deficits in the data integrity of the Information systems and PACS in use in the Department.

To reflect on systems of work and communicate areas of deficit or potential advancement.

To attend Departmental meetings where requested.

To report clinical, non-clinical and radiation incidents in line with Trust and Departmental Risk Management policies.

To enter accurate patient and examination data into RIS and PACS.

To comprehend and adhere to the requirements of IR(ME)R 2017 and IRR 2017.

To comprehend and adhere to all Health & Safety and COSHH regulations.

To enter accurate data into RIS and PACS ensuring patient confidentiality.
