Locum consultant position in Paediatric Intensive Care

The Department of Paediatric Intensive Care is seeking one locum consultant full-time equivalent appointment. This is to cover consultant retirement while the consultant workforce for paediatric critical care is reviewed. Applicants are sought from a background of anaesthesia or paediatrics with appropriate super-specialty training or experience in paediatric intensive care, with a proposed start date in November 2024.

Main duties of the job

The Evelina PICU is a large unit admitting approximately 1100 children per year into a 20 bedded tertiary, and 5 to 10 bedded level two critical care area- all situated over 2 floors. The critical care unit has the capacity to flex up to 33 beds during the busiest times.Forty-five percent of the case load relates to cardiology and cardiac surgery, including provision of post-cardiotomy and respiratory Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO). Fifty percent of admissions are as acute emergencies from the South Thames Paediatric Network catchment covering the South East of England. The South Thames Retrieval Service (STRS) is integrated with, and delivered from within the staffing structure of the PICU. Clinical management of referrals is led by the on-call PICU consultant team.The PICU and retrieval service, STRS, act as the critical care lead centre and hub of an extensive managed clinical network of district general hospitals (DGH) and other paediatric intensive care units in South London. This critical care network manages critically ill children in South London and the South East of England under the banner of the South Thames Paediatric Network (STPN).

About us

This is an excellent opportunity to join a team based in a central London location in a large quaternary Paediatric referral centre and closely associated with partner paediatric intensive care unit at the Royal Brompton site, working as one paediatric critical care directorate, and co-located neonatal and adult intensive care services at the Evelina and St Thomas's hospital, sharing the same site in central London. All newly appointed PICU consultants across both Evelina and RBH sites will be expected to be able and willing to undertake clinical service on either site.

Professional Qualifications

Essential

  • MBBS of equivalent MRCPCH or equivalent qualifications
  • Full GMC Registration On Specialist Register or within 6 months of obtaining CCT by date of interview
  • Note: CESR applicants must be on the specialist register at the point of application Note: The International recruitment and AAC team can advise on MRCPCH equivalence

Desirable

  • Instructor: in either APLS, or PALS Formal qualification or accreditation in a related specialty
  • Higher degree relevant to the specialty (e.g. PhD/MDres/MSc)

Clinical Experience

Essential

  • Completion of all competencies in Paediatric Intensive Care Medicine (minimum of two and half years including 6 months anaesthesia) in a unit approved for training by the RCPCH National GRID PICM Training programme with evidence that this training has been signed off including six months of anaesthetic training OR equivalent OR an existing Practising Consultant in Paediatric Intensive Care Medicine (substantive)
  • Valid APLS and NLS Valid level 3training in child safe-guarding
