Job summary

The Responsible Ai UK (RAi UK) programme is a collaborative, multidisciplinary network that conducts and funds research into Artificial Intelligence (AI) to benefit people, communities and society. It unites the responsible AI ecosystem in the UK and beyond.AI has the potential to profoundly impact daily life, but AI-enabled technologies need to be developed responsibly, with consideration of the social, environmental, and economic contexts in which they will operate.

The RAi UK Health and Social Care Working Group is seeking a dynamic individual to lead the day-to-day delivery of its mission to promote responsible AI-driven solutions in health & social care, ensuring their safe, equitable and ethical development and deployment, for the benefit of all.

The successful applicant will lead on efforts to assess the current state of AI adoption in the NHS, identifying barriers to efficacy, contributions and mitigations of inequities, and understanding of the surrounding ecosystem and skills necessary to accelerate uptake. Initial mapping will inform priority areas, and inform a plan of phased activities, which the postholder will be responsible for delivering.

Anticipated outputs include a comprehensive map of deployable AI products in health & social care, reports and white papers on responsible deployment of AI, including recommended reporting standards, workforce skills development, and proactive stakeholder and public engagement through workshops and roundtables.

Main duties of the job

o Conducting a comprehensive assessment of the current state of AI adoption within health and social care in the UK, including identifying barriers to efficacy, contributions to and mitigations of inequities, and insights into the skills necessary to accelerate AI uptake within the NHS.

o Leading the development and delivery of a plan of phased activities that lead to measurable impact and address priority areas identified in early scoping stages, for the development and deployment of responsible AI-driven solutions in health and social care which benefit all people, communities, and society at large.

o Successfully delivering a roadmap for the establishment of AI Champions in every NHS trust in the UK, leveraging expert knowledge and experience of both the health and social care system and emerging AI technologies. This will include a standard role description and guidance for organisations on requisite and supporting infrastructure, training, monitoring arrangements and approach for continuous shared learning and networking.

o Ensuring that Working Group activities are evidence-based, addressing the areas of greatest opportunity or need. The postholder will help ensure RAi UK investments within health and social care are targeted purposefully, with maximum impact, actively ensuring that any resulting advantages are deployed responsibly across the health and social care system.

The RAi UK Health and Social Care Working Group has been established to address two domains where AI is widely recognised for its potential to significantly impact care, clinical, non-clinical or administrative processes. While notable instances of impact exist and further innovations are in the pipeline for adoption, the existing ecosystem lacks the necessary infrastructure to fully leverage the benefits of AI in a safe and ethical manner at scale. The working group brings together stakeholders from across sectors, including health and social care providers, academia, industry, policy, and government, to unpack the research challenges, conduct research and evidence collation, support the development of national policies and guidance, and cultivate participation, engagement and trust.

Lead on the refinement of the strategic direction of the RAi UK Health and Social Care Working Group, in alignment with RAi UK principles and adhering to the guiding principles set by the World Health Organisation in its global report of AI in health[1].

Collaborate with stakeholders to establish long-term goals and priorities for the working group's activities, working with academic partners to ensure these are supported by robust analysis and evaluation.

Identify emerging opportunities and challenges in AI adoption in health and social care to inform strategic decision-making and priority activities.

Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of strategic initiatives, making adjustments as needed to ensure alignment with RAi UK objectives.

Develop and deliver reports as agreed, setting out key findings and recommendations

Programme Design and Delivery

Lead on the design and development of a comprehensive programme of activities aimed at promoting responsible AI-driven solutions in health and social care, aligning with existing national and international initiatives and demonstrating clear added value of activities.

Define clear objectives, outcomes, and deliverables for each phase of the programme.

Coordinate with internal and external partners to ensure the successful implementation and delivery of programme activities, building full support from stakeholders.

Monitor progress towards programme goals and milestones, taking proactive measures to address any challenges or barriers encountered, and considering plans for scale-up, sustainability and spread in relevant health and care settings.

Ensure that programme activities are evidence-based, culturally sensitive, and responsive to the needs of diverse stakeholders.

Programme Management

Work with the RAi UK Health and Social Care Working Group programme manager to develop comprehensive and cohesive programme plans and ensure delivery of activities to agreed timelines and budget.

Support the development and maintenance of effective reporting within the RAi UK governance structures, including to the RAi UK Leadership team (both through written updates and presentations to respective groups and forums).

Proactively mitigate risk across all activities and assure appropriate communication of effective risk management plans.

Partnership working

Build and proactively develop effective stakeholder relationships across the health and social care system, and actively develop productive relationships by diplomatically managing the competing priorities that may occur in some environments.

Lead consensus building strategies and actively manage potential blockages and competing opinions to deliver constructive and user focused change.

Ensure relationship management strategies across the network are well designed and implemented and refreshed to reflect the rapidly changing environment

Ensure alignment with other relevant national and international programmes of work and policy initiatives, and work through ambiguity and uncertainty.

Ensure the success and learning is well captured and influences relevant national and international audiences in partnership with stakeholders.
