Job summary

Applications are invited for the post of Clinical Fellow/Registrar in the department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology at Guy's and St Thomas' Hospital. This is a trust funded post and is ideal for a doctor wishing to pursue a career in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in the future. The post-holder will have passed MRCOG part 1 (or equivalent) and must have completed at least 2 years at SHO or equivalent level (ST1-2) in an RCOG approved unit.

The unit delivers around 6800 women per year and has an equally busy gynaecology unit, seeing 12 000 emergencies and 10 000 new referrals each year. We have an exceptional reputation for education with protected time for teaching and consultant led educational supervision, and excellent opportunities to develop skills in all areas of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (clinical, research, educational, leadership and service improvement). We have an international reputation for research and development in maternal medicine, assisted conception and prematurity.

The postholder will be expected:

  • To conduct audit and participate in research.
  • To participate in clinical and other service development activities with the object of ensuring a high standard of patient care.
  • To participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training.
  • To show team working ability and develop leadership potential.

Main duties of the job

The post is a full-time and equivalent to ST3-5 level in Obstetrics & Gynaecology at GSTT, working within the Directorate of Women's Services. Clinical fellows will be expected to provide active senior medical input into the antenatal and postnatal care of women in the hospital and community setting. Obstetric duties will include covering the hospital birth centre (HBC) as second on-call (and senior decision maker overnight, with an offsite Consultant on call) and covering elective theatre lists. Further duties will include antenatal clinics; Maternity Assessment Unit (MAU); and ward rounds on the antenatal and postnatal wards.

Gynaecology duties will include gynaecology ward round, gynaecology outpatient clinics, one-stop outpatient minor procedure clinics, inpatient and outpatient operating sessions and emergency gynaecology sessions. The post also includes first on call cover for acute gynaecology at night. The holder will be expected to take an active part in the management of gynaecological emergencies on the emergency gynaecology unit, Gynaecology ward, as well as pre-operative and post-operative management of patients.

Communication and inter-personal skills are very important in this post and the post-holder will be expected to exhibit the highest possible standards in communication with patients, their families, consultants, junior medical staff midwives and nurses since multi-professional team-working forms the foundation of our patient focussed service.
