The Orthopaedic Surgery Department at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust seeks applications for the post of Clinical Fellow in Hand & Wrist Surgery.

Applicants are expected to have passed the FRCS (Tr&Orth). The post and is aimed at senior orthopaedic trainees looking to develop their skills in the management of hand and wrist disorders. The post is for a period of 6 months, commencing on 5 February 2025. The successful candidate at interview will be given the option to choose a 12-month term.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will work within the Orthopaedic Department at Guy's & St. Thomas' Hospitals, for Mr. Gidwani and Mr. Garagnani. They will also assist in the Trust's hand trauma unit and attend a hand trauma list, working closely with colleagues in plastic surgery. The post provides extensive exposure to a wide range of hand surgery, including for osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, wrist pathology, hand and wrist fracture surgery, and congenital hand differences.

The candidates will be expected to participate in clinical, audit and other service activities with the object of ensuring a high standard of patient care. Candidates will also be expected to take an active part in research and undergraduate and postgraduate training and contribute to the management of the clinical service and service development.

There is a 1:9 weekend elective orthopaedic on-call rota based at Guy's hospital, in which the hand fellow will be expected to participate. There is also the option to assist with regular Saturday elective operating lists.

4. Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical:

A range of specialised surgery is undertaken across both sites and the successful applicant will be provided with a timetable of operative and outpatient sessions in all aspects of orthopaedic surgery and to further their Medical training. This will allow you to develop skills in Orthopaedic surgery.

You will be expected to actively participate in the departments audit and clinical governance activities with appraisal.

The postholder will, together with colleagues, be responsible for the provision of specialist orthopaedic services to the Guys & St Thomas NHS Foundation Trust to include:

(a) Diagnosis and treatment of patients of the trust in such hospitals, health centres or clinics or other premises as required.

(b) Continuing clinical responsibility for the patients in your charge, allowing for all proper delegation to, and training of, your staff.

The post will be working over both Guys and St Thomas sites and it is a requirement of your employment that you be prepared to work at any additional or different location owned or served by the trust, on an on-going or temporary basis according to the demands of the service.

Training of junior staff:

The postholder will take responsibility for the training and direction of junior staff allocated to him/her under aegis of the training plan that that postholder has agreed with their supervising consultant.

Teaching:

The postholder will be expected to contribute as appropriate in the teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Clinical Governance:

All medical and dental staff are expected to take part in clinical governance activity, including clinical audit, clinical guideline and protocol development and clinical risk management. They will be expected to produce evidence of their contribution in these areas and their audit of their own clinical work as part of their appraisal.

Study Leave:

Study Leave will be granted at the discretion of the Clinical Lead.

Funding for CPD will be equivalent to that of the appropriate Training post.

Mutual Obligation to Monitor Hours

There is a contractual obligation on employers to monitor working hours through robust local monitoring arrangements supported by national guidance, and on individual doctors to co-operate with those monitoring arrangements.
