Job summary

This role comprises of a 12 month period of employment with 6 month rotations in the Addictions Clinical Care Suite and the Emergency Department at St Thomas' Hospital.

Toxicology

As a new initiative the successful candidate has an exciting opportunity to work as an integral part in the early development of the ACCS unit. The candidate will be the Clinical Fellow taking part in the daily medical care of patients admitted to the London Addictions Care Pathway (ACCS).

This post is designed for an FY3 level trainee to:

o Develop/ expand their skills in clinical medicine related to Addictions care and Clinical Toxicology in a specialist clinical and academic centre o Undertake research/QIP related to the development of the ACCS unit and Clinical Toxicology Emergency Medicine

We are looking for doctors to join our large friendly team and contribute ideas about improving patient care. This post will give you non shop floor time. You will have the equivalent of 2 days a fortnight to follow the special interest or boost your CV depending on personal career needs/interest/development of training). It is useful for those wishing to take some time out of training from anytime after F2 to those wanting a break before continuing into higher specialty training.

Main duties of the job

Toxicology

The ACCS 11 bedded unit will be located on a general medical ward at St Thomas' Hospital. When on duty for the ACCS the post holder will be supervised by the consultants in Clinical Toxicology/ General Medicine and Addictions Psychiatry. They will have theopportunity to join the daily consultant led ward rounds on the ACCS and deliver ongoing care to in-patients on the unit. The post-holder will receive training and gain clinical experience in acute assessment of patients with alcohol/drug withdrawal states in context of serve medical comorbidities. They will also have the opportunity to join specialist Addiction Nurse led rounds, support psychosocial interventions and attend dedicated outpatient clinics for those with addiction requiring medical follow up e.g. Liver assessment and fibroscan clinics.

Emergency Medicine

These posts are useful for doctors needing competencies in ACCS /Emergency Medicine training. We consider them developmental so encourage work-based assessments, enrolling for an e-portfolio or doing exams. When on duty the Clinical Fellow, with other more senior Emergency Medicine speciality trainees, assists the Consultants in direct patient management and supervising the work of the junior (FY2) medical staff. We all work hard but are very supportive and keen to help progress careers.

Essential

  • Full GMC Registration

Desirable

  • BSc, BMedSci (or other intercalated degree), other degrees/qualifications

Previous experience

Essential

  • 1 year in general medicine or associated specialties at Foundation Level including acute admissions, continuing care in general medicine, emergency medicine
  • Prove track record of hospital medicine in the NHS, with experience in EM Short term locums & clinical attachment are not acceptable and will not be considered. This is ONLY suitable as a first UK post IF the candidate has worked for a minimum of 12 months in EM fulltime. Candidates will not be shortlisted unless they fulfil the criteria above

Desirable

  • Additional experience in one or more of other related specialties (acute medicine, orthopaedics, cardiology, ITU, anaesthetics, plastics or primary care).
  • Previous research projects with abstract and/or full paper publications.
  • Previous FY experience in Psychiatry, Addiction Medicine, Clinical Toxicology and/or EM
