Job summary
This fellowship involves working alongside the PI Professor Jugdeep Dhesi and the research team to deliver the NIHR funded POPS-Sup study addressing the research question, 'can CGA-based perioperative medicine services (POPS services) be implemented throughout the NHS, to improve clinical outcomes for older patients undergoing elective and emergency surgery with cost effectiveness?'. You will work as part of and be supported by a large and well established multi-disciplinary research team with a strong track record of producing high impact, translational research. Experience will be gained in writing research protocols and ethics applications, multicentre study delivery, project management and steering committees, working with statisticians and health economists to analyse data, writing for publication and dissemination including through PPIE partners.
There is an option to discuss clinical experience working within the POPS service whilst employed in this research capacity.
Main duties of the job
We are advertising for a 12-18 month Research Fellow to work with the Perioperative medicine for Older People undergoing Surgery (POPS) team on the recently NIHR funded POPS-Sup study. This position provides an exciting opportunity to work at an internationally recognised centre of excellence in perioperative care and develop research skills in mixed methods applied to the evaluation of complex interventions.
The post holder will work as the POPS-Sup fellow and be involved in study design and delivery, gaining experience in research governance, recruitment, data collection, data analysis, patient and public engagement, linkage with NHS digital, writing papers for publication, dissemination to patient and public partners and policy makers. There will be an opportunity to apply for additional funding obtain a higher degree (PhD) if the successful applicant would be interested.
The post holder will work within the Department of Ageing and Health 'Perioperative medicine of Older people undergoing Surgery' (POPS) service, delivering CGA-based care to older people undergoing elective and emergency surgery. The work will be based at Guy's and St Thomas' Hospitals, with national travel, and there may be opportunities for flexible and remote working on negotiation.

Duties and responsibilities:
Research:
The post holder will, with the help of the multi-disciplinary research team, achieve a PhD through working on the POPS-Sup study. This will include:
Adhere to Clinical Research Facility (CRF) policies regarding training and medicine management
Supervising and training staff from different disciplines
Writing research protocols and HRA applications
Delivery of multi-centre study (experience of recruitment, consent and data collection/storage)
Mixed methods including qualitative (semi-structured interviewing), process evaluation, and quantitative working with statisticians, implementation scientists and health economists
Contribute to the ongoing development, efficiency and operational functioning of the research team
Maintain adequate participants records and ensure all relevant information is documented in the study and medical records and communicated with clinical teams.
Work with Central Trust R&D
Attend the regular clinical research meetings.
Contribute to the publication of research performed within the group and communicating the results to the wider public.
Attend study management group and steering committee meetings
Ensure compliance with all aspects of GCP to deliver clinical research of high quality.
Accurate, high quality clinical data acquisition and management.
Experience with co-design and production of research with PPIE partners
Presentation of research findings including with policy makers
Access to postgraduate courses at Kings College London relevant to PhD
