Junior Clinical Fellow (SHO) in Cardiothoracic Surgery
Fixed Term - 6 Months (possible extension of up to 23 months)

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the cardiothoracic department at the Royal Brompton Hospital. This post is suitable for individuals wishing to pursue a career in Cardiothoracic Surgery or someone who simply wishes to increase their experience of surgery in general. The job will provide excellent exposure for those planning to apply for national selection for speciality training in cardiothoracic surgery.
Although this is not an approved training position, you will be assigned a named educational supervisor who will work with you to construct an individual training plan. This will include regular appraisal and the opportunity to participate in audit and research activities within the department.
If successful, you will be joining a dynamic team with an international reputation in adult cardiac and thoracic surgery. The posts are available for 6 months in the first instance, extendable by mutual agreement up to a maximum period of 23 months.
Applicants must have MBBS or equivalent and be fully registered with the GMC.
The successful candidate will be part of a 8 person rota which does not include night shifts.

Main duties of the job
- To acquaint him/herself with details of patient management in discussion with the consultants and ensure their efficient execution.
- To ensure that good communication is maintained with all medical colleagues, e.g. anaesthetists, cardiologists, nursing staff and paramedical departments such as physiotherapists, radiographers and ancillary staff, to the benefit of the patient.
- To ensure that specialist registrars and consultants are kept informed regarding alteration in the condition of any of their patients.
- To ensure that all in-patient notes are kept up to date and tidy.

Job responsibilities
- To take history, examine and record all findings of all patients admitted under the consultants care.
- Carry out and arrange all relevant investigations.
- To see and examine all patients under the care of the consultant concerned, including those in the Intensive Care Unit.
- To assist when required in the operating theatre.
- To attend and assist in out-patient clinics if appropriate.
- To arrange for the transfer of patients to other hospitals or discharge home, including a discharge summary which the patient must take with them.
- During duty weekends and evenings, to be responsible for the care of all cardiothoracic patients on the wards.
- To perform minor surgical procedures such as chest aspiration, insertion of intercostal tubes, etc. if necessary under the supervision of a specialist registrar.
- To cross cover, in conjunction with other ST1/junior clinical fellows, when one ST1/junior clinical fellow is absent or on annual or study leave and with the guidance and supervision of the appropriate specialist registrar, to ensure that the duties and responsibilities of the absent colleague are carried out.
- To keep the specialist registrar and consultant informed of any patient who is giving cause for concern.
- To communicate to patients relatives the progress of that patient.
- To be available for emergency calls to ITU and other parts of the hospital, if required, i.e. for cardiac arrest.
- To participate in research projects which may already be in progress.
- To participate in lecturing to other staff if required, e.g. nurses and physiotherapists.
- To participate in the medical audit programme and update PATS data entry.
- To accept that occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances may occur, and to respond to the needs of the service when they arise.
