Job summary

Based in the Vaccine and Trials research Team at Guy's and St. Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust and linked to Infectious Diseases research, this appointment provides an excellent opportunity for a doctor with recent experience in acute/general medicine or critical care to gain experience of clinical research within the supportive environment of a leading teaching and research hospital. The position provides the post holder with the opportunity to be involved in the testing of treatments and interventions. The clinical trial portfolio developing and evolving, the research unit will be able to support other departments with their clinical research delivery.

The Research Physician will work alongside experienced Principal Investigators (PI) within a multidisciplinary team and contribute to the clinical operations of the Vaccine and Trials research team. The post holder will provide medical support for patients and healthy volunteers participating in COVID-19, Flu, mpox and other clinical trials involving novel therapies and vaccines prior to and following market authorisation, working alongside Principal Investigators, clinical research nurses and clinical trial practitioners. As part of this work, the post holder will support risk assessments, developing and implementing critical risk mitigation strategies for clinical trials.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work collaboratively with the PIs and Vaccine and Trials research management team to shape and guide this service dedicated to clinical research. The post holder will be actively encouraged to contribute to the work of the UK Clinical Research Network (UKCRN) working groups and present relevant outcomes at national conferences.

The post would suit any doctor with a minimum of 2 years post-registration experience wishing to gain experience in clinical trial research. The post is available as a full-time position.

There are up to 2 posts which will start in August 2024 for 1 year, and another post for 6month will start in February 2025

Qualifications and Training:

Essential

  • MBBS or equivalent with full valid GMC Registration and hold a licence to practise
  • Advanced Life Support Certificate from the Resuscitation Council UK or equivalent by intended start date

Desirable

  • Postgraduate specialist qualification e.g. MRCP (UK) or equivalent.

Clinical Experience:

Essential

  • A minimum of 2 years post-registration experience in the last 3 years leading to GMC Foundation Competencies or equivalent.
  • Ability to apply clinical knowledge and judgement to problems (i) to prioritise clinical need (ii) to maximise safety and minimise risk (ii) manage an acutely ill patient (iii) to discuss and appropriately escalate.

Desirable

  • Experience of managing infections in a range of patient groups
  • Experience in the conduct of clinical trials
