Job summary

The Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) service at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust (GSTT) is one of two nationally commissioned (NSCT) services for adults with this disease (the other centre is at Solihull Hospital in Birmingham) and works in collaboration with the two national paediatric EB centres (at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) and Birmingham Children's Hospital). The service at GSTT provides comprehensive multidisciplinary care for approximately 450 adult EB patients, including outpatient reviews, complex multidisciplinary team assessments and inpatient admissions. Specialties represented in the EB multidisciplinary team include specialist nursing, dentistry, dietetics, plastic surgery, hand therapy, physiotherapy, palliative care, pain management, psychotherapy, oncology, ophthalmology and podiatry. Alongside the clinical EB service, GSTT hosts the Robin Eady National Diagnostic EB Laboratory, providing comprehensive skin biopsy and genetic analysis for all types of EB from the UK and abroad. The clinical and diagnostic EB services at GSTT are highly regarded nationally and internationally as centres of excellence for the diagnosis and management of this rare group of diseases.

Main duties of the job

  • To receive subspeciality training and further development in adult epidermolysis bullosa, paediatric dermatology and the diagnosis and management of genodermatoses with particular focus on epidermolyisis bullosa & disorders of keratinisation
  • To deliver clinical and other service activities in order to provide a high standard of care for adult EB patients, as well as children with skin disease and patients with genetic skin disease
  • To support nursing and administrative staff in the efficient and smooth running of the EB service
  • To actively contribute to clinical research activities of St. John's Institute of Dermatology including presentations at national and international meetings and publications of research outputs

These functions are undertaken in both clinical and academic settings.On the academic side the Institute offers two postgraduate degrees in Dermatology and makes an important contribution to the Biomedical School as part of the Division of Genetics and Molecular Medicine, GKT School of Medicine, King's College London. GSTT and KCL provide one of only five Biomedical Research Centres in the UK.

Job responsibilities

Clinical:

The postholder will, together with colleagues, contribute to the provision of dermatology services to the Guys and St. Thomas Hospital Trust as follows:

  • Become an active member of the multidisciplinary team delivering care to patients with EB and other genodermatoses, as well as children with skin disease
  • To support outpatient clinics (EB, genetics, paediatric dermatology,skin cancer screening)
  • To contribute to the in-patient care of EB and genodermatosis patients within the Trust
  • To work with the EB Patient Pathway Manager, EB clinical nurse specialists and administrative staff to co-ordinate and facilitate outpatient, day case and inpatient episodes for EB patients
  • To provide continuing clinical responsibility for the patient in your charge

Teaching and Training

All fellows are expected to contribute to the extensive teaching and training programme at St Johns.

Specifically, this post encompasses

  • Responsibility shared with colleagues for the educational supervision of trainees attending the department.
  • support for the postgraduate MSc course

Research:

  • To support the extensive clinical research programme at St Johns including
  • supervising and contributing to the provision of required medical support for patients participating in clinical trials
  • promoting clinical research activities to other members of clinical staff within St. Johns thereby enhancing the delivery of research programme

Clinical Governance:

All medical and dental staff are expected to take part in clinical governance activity, including clinical audit, clinical guideline and protocol development and clinical risk management. They will be expected to produce evidence of their contribution in these areas and their audit of their own clinical work as part of their appraisal.

Mutual Obligation to Monitor Hours:

There is a contractual obligation on employers to monitor working hours through robust local monitoring arrangements supported by national guidance, and on individual doctors to co-operate with those monitoring arrangements.
