Job summary

We are looking to recruit a Band 7 highly motivated, experienced nurse to lead our respiratory service in the chest Clinic at Guys and St Thomas's.

The Chest clinic team co-ordinates the various Respiratory Outpatient clinics on both Guys and St Thomas's hospital sites providing a high standard of care for our outpatient and day case patients. The successful candidate will have excellent leadership and communication skills, as well as a passion for respiratory nursing. You will need to be flexible, motivated, knowledgeable and confident. As an integral part of both the nursing and service management teams you will contribute towards the efficient operation of the clinics and be able to adapt and lead a team though change as the service continues to grow and develop.

Main duties of the job

The Chest Clinic is an exciting and dynamic clinical area that investigates and treats inpatients and outpatients from across the South East of England with a variety of respiratory conditions such as TB, lung cancer, COPD, ILD, and Asthma. As well as providing routine outpatient appointments the clinical areas see patients for invasive and non-invasive day case procedures such as medical thoracoscopy, chest drain insertion, aspiration, bronchoscopy, EBUS, biologic and cytotoxic infusion therapy, and induced sputum. We are constantly looking to develop and learn to accommodate the rapidly expanding activities of the Chest Clinics at both Guy's and St Thomas'. A recent merger with the Royal Brompton and Harefield hospitals adds a new level of excitement and future growth to our respiratory teams and services.We are looking to recruit a team player, who will bring a positive 'can do' attitude, flexibility, a desire to learn and develop skills, with a passion for creating a positive patient experience. You will be part of a dynamic multi professional team that provides high quality and compassionate care to local and regional communities. The successful candidate will be required to work 9 -5 Monday to Friday and would need to be flexible depending on the daily activities and challenges that come with running a busy and often fast paced clinic.

Job responsibilities

Clinical Leadership and Managerial

- Lead the clinic nursing team and build successful links between key professionals to support and promote effective multi-disciplinary team working,

- Manage the department nursing staff, perform appraisals and ensure the patients receive high quality clinical care and a good patient experience

- Be wholly accountable for his / her practice in line with the NMC code of professional conduct and takes every reasonable opportunity to sustain and improve his / her knowledge and professional competence

- Ensure that the departments have adequate resources / equipment to provide an effective service

- Lead and support the clinic team through the process of change, demonstrating tenacity, drive, professional integrity, balance and perspective.

- Work clinically across Guys and St Thomas's sites, performing respiratory diagnostic testing, venepuncture and cannulation, administer medication via various routes, assist with admission, recovery and invasive procedures.

- Work closely with and deputise for the Matron as appropriate providing assurances that patient safety and clinical governance is a priority

Staff Management, Education and Training

- Motivate, develop, support and identify training needs for department staff- Implement and work within the Trusts HR policies on all staffing matters, including sickness, capability and disciplinary issues.

- Work with the Matron and Human Resources Department in the recruitment, selection, appointment and retention of staff

- Participate in appraisals and the setting of objectives for junior staff in the department to enable them to achieve optimal effectiveness and to understand their contribution to the directorate

- Ensure that appropriate written induction programmes are available and utilised for all new staff within the department

- Ensure that staff attend and assist in training where appropriate on mandatory training sessions and maintain accurate records of these

Clinical Governance, Audit and Research

- Ensure that the delivery of care to all patients meet the standards set by yourself and the Trust

- Be proactive in the risk assessment, management, clinical incident reporting and management of complaints

- Contribute to the development of Directorate and Trust policies, procedures and clinical guidelines and ensure adherence by self and ward team

- Undertake clinical and associated audits as appropriate for the given area

- Assist in the investigation and timely resolution of complaints, incidents and comments

Service Development

- Contribute to and to be aware of the business plan and its implication for service delivery and nursing

- Proactively seek feedback on patient and public experience in order to address concerns in a timely manner and build on success

- Assist with the development, implementation and evaluation of departmental protocols ensuring coherence and consistency across both sites

- To undertake audit and monitoring of the department/ward and participate in the implementation of changes to improve service delivery
