Job summary

The Chief Renal Technologist will have to be able to effectively manage a range of responsibilities, including ensuring that all renal dialysis equipment in any of the haemodialysis treatment areas is fully supported and working appropriately. You will work with a small team and will be expected to lead by example and ensure that the workload is effectively prioritised and completed.

The work will be varied, interesting and challenging and could be in any one of 7 treatment areas including on the Guy's site, at the Evelina Children's' Hospital, Camberwell, New Cross, Tunbridge Wells, Guernsey or at any one of our home haemodialysis patients' houses.

The Chief Renal Technologist will be expected to develop a variety of skills including leadership, partnership working, team working, and resource management along with the opportunity to develop general management skills.

Main duties of the job

Applicants will be working as part of the technical team to carry-out repairs, servicing and calibrations on a full range of Haemodialysis machines, individual water treatment systems, water treatment plant and associated medical equipment used within the renal environment, in line with the manufacturers' recommendations and guidelines.

About us

We are a small team supporting a busy renal department working for a leading London NHS Hospital Trust. The department currently supports 7 renal treatment and satellite units, including Guernsey and has an active and expanding home haemodialysis patient population across the South East. We currently look after 200+ haemodialysis machines which support over 800 patients receiving haemodialysis treatment.

Job responsibilities

Technical Responsibility:

The chief technologist will work in and have responsibility for all of the equipment in any one of the areas listed below, as required and will be expected to prioritise workload to ensure that haemodialysis treatment within that area is maintained.

Organise and arrange for the efficient and effective repair and servicing of all dialysis equipment on the Guys site; at satellite and kidney treatment centres including Guernsey; the Evelina Childrens Hospital and at patients homes.

Technical Services Specific:

To ensure that adequate and appropriate spare parts are readily available for the repair and maintenance of all equipment and ensuring that the Deputy Technical Manager is made aware when spare parts stock levels drop and ordering is required.

To assist the Directorate Equipment Manager (DEM),in monitoring the purchase, use, repair, service and replacement of equipment used within the Renal Directorate and maintaining accurate records.

To assist the Technical Manager in the role of Health and Safety representative for the department, and include active input into Risk Assessments, Manual Handling and The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health.

To assist with the preparation of protocols to cover the maintenance, servicing and testing of equipment to ensure its safety in use.

To ensure that all new equipment is safety checked, acceptance tested and documented before being passed ready for use.

To maintain an awareness of the current equipment standards, safety information bulletins and guidelines and to ensure that all equipment in use, meets these standards.

To assist with the equipment inventory and ensure it is kept up to date.

To assist with the On-Going evaluation of new medical and technical equipment, working with other members of the renal unit as required and to consider research and development projects that maybe appropriate for the department.

To participate in nurse, patient and technologist training and assist in course developments as and when required.

Technical Services General:To carry-out repairs, servicing and calibrations on a full range of Haemodialysis and Peritoneal Dialysis machines, individual water treatment systems, water treatment plant and associated medical equipment used within the renal environment, in line with the manufacturers recommendations and guidelines.

To ensure that accurate records and reports are maintained for each item of equipment.

To ensure that the Planned Preventative Maintenance programmes, for all of the renal equipment, is followed.

To assist with the installation and removal of dialysis equipment, into the homes of Renal Patients.

To participate in the 24 hour On-Call support service provided by the department.

To comply with all policies and procedures in use within the Renal Unit.

To carry-out any duties that may be considered appropriate to the running of the department.

General Management:To liaise with the appropriate external agencies, e.g. Building Contractors, Water Companies, Electricity Suppliers, Equipment Manufacturers etc., as required.

To liase with the appropriate internal disciplines, e.g. Medical Team, Works Department, Medical Physics Department, Infection Control Officer etc., as required.

To assist with the establishment of new policy documents and protocols and to ensure their implementation.

To ensure that current policy and protocols are understood and adhered to.

To assist in the recruitment, training and induction of new technical staff.

Staff ManagementTo ensure that the technical workload within the renal units, the community units, the paediatric unit and the home patients are fully supported and covered, ensuring that all of the equipment in the corresponding areas are correctly serviced and maintained.

To be able to take on the First Line of management within the department in the absence of the Deputy Technical Manager.

General:To participate in various other duties that may be considered appropriate by the Technical Manager or Deputy Technical Manager for the efficient and effective running of the Technical Department.

Knowledge/Qualifications

Essential

  • A bio-medical engineering Degree or a degree in an appropriate engineering discipline

Desirable

  • A degree in Clinical Technology
  • Registered on the Register of Clinical Technologists

Experience

  • Substantial experience working at Band 6 and/or 7 within a Renal Department

Desirable

  • Experience working within a commercial dialysis company
