Job summary

To provide a professional, efficient and customer focused portering service that supports the clinical function of the Trust and promotes the health and well-being of patients.

To ensure that staff, patients and visitors are assisted, at all times and in any appropriate matters, in a manner that reflects positively on the Trust and the service.

Main duties of the job

Applications are invited from enthusiastic and highly motivated individuals to join the Estates, Facilities & Capital Projects Department's portering team. This varied and interesting role calls for excellent communication skills and experience of working closely with the general public. You will need to be able to deal with patients and visitors in a courteous and sympathetic manner and the post requires a high level of professionalism. Though this role focuses on the movement and disposal of hospital waste, it also involves general portering which involves moving patients, collecting blood samples and equipment, moving furniture and many other functions vital to the functioning of the hospital. This post provides many intrinsic rewards to the post holder and can be a most rewarding role if approached enthusiastically.

Job responsibilities

To transfer patients between wards, departments and other appropriate points within the Trust, as required by users, by wheelchair, trolley or bed.

To assist, as required, in the movement and transfer of patients where the task is not driven by the department.

To escort ambulant patients, staff or relatives between wards, departments and other appropriate points within the Trust where there is a need for guidance, reassurance or assistance with baggage or other chattels. This service may include escorting between buildings.

To man the Trusts reception desks as required and to ensure that by personal appearance, courteous attitude and professional manner that the operative reflects positively on the Trust.

To collect and deliver blood samples, blood and plasma products, urine samples, reports and other appropriate laboratory specimens. To transport these specimens between wards, departments and Laboratory Medicine safely, securely and efficiently in a manner that does not jeopardise the health or well-being of any persons.

To collect and dispose of clinical and non-clinical waste as required. To ensure that all waste is disposed of through the appropriate stream and that all reasonable measures are taken to ensure the health and welfare of persons.

To change medical gases cylinders and manifolds, restock supplies of these gases at ward and departmental level and to support the orderly organisation of medical gases storage areas.

To remove, or assist in the removal, of deceased patients to the mortuary and to assist in the lying out of these persons, where appropriate. To release deceased patients to relatives or funeral directors. To ensure that all appropriate policies and procedures are followed throughout this process and that, at all times, the dignity of the deceased is maintained.

To play an active role in the Trusts fire team as laid down by the Trusts approved Fire Policy.

To undertake any other duties commensurate with the grade as requested.
