Job summary

We are seeking an experienced and motivated nurse to join our team on Olive Ward. If you are eager to develop your clinical skills and competencies within haematology nursing, then we want to hear from you!

Olive Ward is a 14 bedded ward that predominantly cares for haematology cancer patients, including those receiving active treatment, palliative and end of life care. We also support patients with oncology malignancies and sickle cell disease.

The nursing team prides itself on a cohesive multidisciplinary approach to patient care, striving to provide high clinical standards in a supportive environment. The unit is fast paced and challenging and we are looking for a confident and dynamic band 5 nurse who wants to continue their development in a supportive and ultimately rewarding environment.

Support on the ward is underpinned by wider management team including the ward manager, deputy managers, matrons and heads of nursing.

Main duties of the job

The ideal applicant should be enthusiastic about cancer care, even if you don't yet have any haematology/oncology experience. If you are a confident and proactive practitioner who is always patient focused then we would like to hear from you.

We pride ourselves on giving high quality, specialised and person-centred care. As a nurse on this ward you will have the opportunity to develop your assessment and prioritisation skills as well as escalation of the acutely unwell adult. You will also be able to develop your knowledge of a range of cancer related issues and conditions including oncology emergencies.

You will work closely with the wider MDT including medical teams, physios, OTs, and other AHPs as well as wider clinical specialties including palliative care.

Job responsibilities

As a band 5 on Olive Ward you will be responsible for the day to day planning, implementation and evaluation of bedside nursing care. You will independently manage a group of patients whilst working as part of the multidisciplinary team, delivering individualised andpersonalised direct patient care.

You are wholly accountable for your practice in line with the NMC code of professional conduct and you should take every reasonable opportunity to sustain and improve your knowledge and professional competence.

You should be an excellent communicator with patients and their significant people regarding their disease treatment and management and without any personal bias or prejudgment. You should be competent in undertaking prescribed physical observations including: cardiovascular observations, blood sugar monitoring, urinalysis, fluid balance monitoring, catheter care and GCS. You will also have exposure to drain management, PICC/PORT care, PCA management, syringe driver management, NG and ryles tube insertion and management, and management of haematology emergencies.

You will be responsible for the correct administration of prescribed medication via oral, enteral and IV routes including transfusion of blood and blood products.
