Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Specialist Occupational Therapist to work as part of an established and dynamic respiratory and mechanical-ventilation multi-disciplinary therapy team.

We seek an individual who is autonomous, forward thinking and enthusiastic to work with us within the Lane Fox Service (including the Remeo Centre). The successful candidate will manage a variable clinical caseload working with a variety of patients across the lifespan who require mechanical ventilation - with the support of a senior specialist team lead occupational therapist.

Our large and well-established multi-disciplinary Lane Fox Services team will support the successful candidate to further enhance and extend their assessment, intervention, rehabilitation and complex discharge planning within this evolving speciality for Occupational Therapy. The role requires working across sites at both the Lane Fox Unit (St Thomas' Hospital), and Remeo Centre (Redhill, Surrey).

You will be expected to support the Senior Specialist Occupational Therapist , championing the role of Occupational Therapy. You will be part of a dynamic, innovative and developing service, with opportunities to develop your quality improvement, research and service development skills.

Main duties of the job

To provide specialist acute OT assessment and intervention for patients across the Lane Fox Unit and REMEO Centre at Guy's and St. Thomas' Hospital Trust. This post is supervised by a Senior Specialist Occupational Therapist. This post is currently a static post however we are looking to explore opportunities for gaining experience and providing cross-cover to critical care.

  • To use clinical reasoning, critical thinking, reflection and analysis to support assessments using a client-centred approach and current evidence base to assess, treat, implement, evaluate and document Occupational Therapy interventions.
  • To be responsible for the assessment, treatment, implementation and documentation of Occupational Therapy interventions for patients with respiratory and/ or neuro-muscular conditions.
  • To develop positive and collaborative working relationships across Health and Social Care.
  • To be responsible for the maintenance and development of our CPD and continuous learning.
  • To supervise and develop Junior Occupational Therapy Staff and assistants.
  • To be responsible for the education of Occupational Therapy Students on Fieldwork Practice.

1. To be responsible for providing specialist individual client centred assessments on Lane Fox Unit and REMEO Centre for patients, and when cover is required for patients attending the Polio/ Post-Polio Syndrome (PPS) therapies outpatient clinic.

2. To address occupational performance skills, patterns, and activity demands in collaboration with patients and carers both in the hospital and patients home environment

3. To undertake specialist multi-needs assessment using analysis and synthesis to develop individual goal and task orientated treatment plans in collaboration with patients, carers and colleagues.

4. To carry out physical, cognitive and functional assessments and treatment to facilitate and promote functional independence.

5. Ensure reviews demonstrate ethical clinical reasoning and problem-solving techniques to determine agreed outcomes across health and social care.

6. Accurately record all professional judgements and decisions taken, keeping records of plans in accordance with Occupational Therapy Policies.

7. To maintain high standards of patient care working within the Occupational Therapy Code of Conduct and Occupational Therapy Service Standards and Procedures.

8. To allocate appropriate patient related tasks and ongoing treatment to the Therapy assistant, and reviewing and monitoring outcomes.

9. 10. To be proactive in the monitoring, recording and reporting of changes in clinical practice which may influence Occupational Therapy Service delivery.

11. To use critical reflection and evidence of best practice to develop and enhance the patient and carer experience.

12. To demonstrate understanding and application of National guidelines and legislation relating to health and social care and their impact on Occupational Therapy practice.
