Our annual turnover is now £1.3 billion.Applications are invited for a full time position of a Senior Clinical Fellow with an interest in Oculoplastic & Cataract to join our renowned eye department. The post is for 1 year fixed term but maybe extended subject to satisfactory progression.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will have previous clinical experience in Oculoplastic & Cataract and be able to perform simple non complicated cataract procedures independently.The successful candidate will support the provision of the ophthalmology service including clinics, ward rounds, theatres and eye emergency. The post timetable consists of working in the Oculoplastic Service, the General/ Cataract Service, with clinics and theatre sessions for each. There is also a regular responsibility to the Eye Emergency Service including day time casualty sessions and a regular on call commitment. The post is ideal for a senior level trainee planning a career in oculoplastic and cataract ophthalmology. The post holder's hours will normally be approximately 0900 to 1700 Monday to Friday. There is an call commitment / supplement attached to this post. The eye department is based in Central London at St Thomas Hospital (5 min walk between Westminster and Waterloo stations). Job description

Job responsibilities

The post holder will, together with colleagues, be responsible for the provision of ophthalmic services to the Guys & St Thomas NHS Foundation Trust to include:

  • Diagnosis and treatment of patients of the trust in such hospitals, health centers or clinics or other premises as required.
  • Continuing clinical responsibility for the patients in your charge, allowing for all proper delegation to, and training of, your staff.

The post holder will take responsibility for the training and direction of junior staff allocated to him/her under aegis of the training plan that that post holder has agreed with their supervising consultant.

The post holder will participate in the general on call rota.

The post holder will be expected to contribute as appropriate in the teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate students.

All medical and dental staff are expected to take part in clinical governance activity, including clinical audit, clinical guideline and protocol development and clinical risk management. They will be expected to produce evidence of their contribution in these areas and their audit of their own clinical work as part of their appraisal.

There is a contractual obligation on employers to monitor working hours through robust local monitoring arrangements supported by national guidance, and on individual doctors to co-operate with those monitoring arrangements.

Neither the London Deanery nor the Royal College accredits this post for postgraduate training. However the post holder will be expected to attend and contribute to educational activities e.g. departmental meetings, x-ray meetings, pathology meetings, multidisciplinary meetings, journal clubs etc.
