Post-CCT Clinical Fellow in Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance

Harefield Hospital Site

1 Post Available from 4th April 2023 and a second post is potentially available from 4th October 2023.

This 6-month post is for a clinical fellow who will spend 6 months being trained in CMR and contributing to the CMR service at Harefield Hospital (the post may be renewable by mutual consent, up to a maximum of 2 years).

Main duties of the job

  • To assist in the running of the clinical CMR service under the direction of the Clinical Lead, including being fully trained in CMR safety and the delivery of a safe NHS service, and being present at CMR scans.
  • Depending on the mutually agreed post duration, the fellow will be expected to gain competence in advanced CMR techniques useful to an advanced heart failure and cardiothoracic transplant centre, including quantitative parametric mapping techniques and CMR of patients with cardiac devices, as well as achieve Level EACVI 2 or 3 accreditation in CMR as appropriate.
  • There are no formalised research duties in the job plan for this position. However, depending on the individual and the mutually-agreed duration of the post, the fellow may be involved in CMR research and peer-reviewed publication.
  • To maintain a high standard of patient care at all times. To liaise with the Chief Technologist in CMR with regard to clinical service issues.
  • To liaise with the physics and clinical staff to ensure the safe operation of all imaging equipment in the CMR Unit.

About us

Harefield Hospital is the largest advanced heart and lung failure and cardiothoracic transplant centre in the UK and the regional primary angioplasty centre.

The Harefield CMR Department was established in 2008 and moved to a new dedicated Harefield Imaging Centre in 2019. This contains state-of-the-art accommodation and equipment including two Siemens Aera 1.5T scanners dedicated to clinical CMR. The CMR department is a regional referral centre, performing ~2,500 clinical cardiovascular CMR studies per year.

The CMR unit is led by Dr Joyce Wong, and the research programme at Harefield is led by Dr Chiara Bucciarelli-Ducci. There are 4 additional consultants; Dr Tarun Mittal, Dr Tina Khan, Dr Aigul Baltabaeva, and Dr Elena Surkova (Locum).

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • Assisting in the running of the clinical CMR service under the direction of the Clinical Lead for CMR
  • To be fully trained in CMR safety and the delivery of a safe NHS service.
  • To maintain a high standard of patient care at all times.
  • To liaise with the Cross-sectional Imaging Superintendent with regard to CMR clinical service issues.
  • To liaise with the physics and clinical staff to ensure the safe operation of all imaging equipment in the CMR Department
  • To ensure appropriate infection control measures are utilised when necessary. Paying particular attention to personal protection as well as the management of equipment and linens.
  • To observe safety regulations with particular regard to the Local Rules for CMR and the Health and Safety at Work Act.
  • If necessary, to remove property from a patient, for example to take any metal object or jewellery off for a CMR scan and ensure the patients property is looked after and returned to them at the completion of the procedure.
  • To communicate appropriately with other members of staff, giving support and advice where necessary.
  • To train radiographers, technologists and other doctors in the use of MR scanning equipment, and CMR scanning techniques.
  • To welcome and assist visitors to the CMR Department.
  • The post holder will maintain good working relationships with multidisciplinary team within the CMR Department and the hospital.
  • To liaise with other departments/wards within the hospital and various external sources in order to provide a quality service to patients and clinicians.
  • To communicate appropriately with other members of staff, giving support and advice where necessary.
  • To communicate effectively and empathetically with patients and their escorts prior to, during and after an examination and to assess specific communication needs of individual patients.
  • To use tact and sensitivity when asking personal questions, e.g. checking pregnancy status before an examination.
  • To explain procedures and reassure patients who may have concerns regarding claustrophobia in order to gain their cooperation.
  • To use complex and expensive MR scanning equipment safely and responsibly.
