Our Critical Care comprises of three unique and exciting areas, the Adult Intensive Care Unit, Elizabeth High Dependency and The Post-Anaesthetic Care Unit.

Candidates will ideally have prior experience in recovery or critical care nursing. Experience in cardiac nursing is desirable although not essential. We require all applicants to have experience in an acute surgical setting. Induction and training will be tailored to suit the individual candidates needs and provide support for those with minimal experience of caring for sedated and mechanically ventilated patients.

The unit offers a variety of development opportunities to successful candidates, including ILS, ALS, EAPLS, critical care diploma/degree modules as well as a range of in-house study days.

Main duties of the job

The post is working within Critical Care at the Royal Brompton hospital and rotates through all three areas, Adult Intensive Care Unit, Elizabeth High Dependency Unit and Post-Anaesthetic Care Unit.

The post holder will work under the supervision of the ward manager and multi-disciplinary team members in monitoring and maintaining excellent standards of nursing care and staff development, as part of the ward team.

To be responsible for the continuing professional development and overall performance of student nurses and unqualified staff in Critical Care.

The post holder is expected to carry out all relevant forms of care with provisions of preceptorship/mentorship.

To be flexible in the approach to the clinical area and provide cover for any area specified.

Adult Intensive Care Unit

The AICU offers an opportunity to gain knowledge and experience in Intensive Care nursing at one of the country's leading cardiorespiratory units.

As a commissioned Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) centre, we care for patients with severe acute respiratory and cardiac failure. We also care for patients with a wide range of complex cardiac conditions and lung disease, and for patients after cardiac and thoracic surgery.

Elizabeth High Dependency Unit

  • We are an 18 beds level 2 Cardio-respiratory HDU
  • We are a specialist centre for adult congenital heart disease and lung conditions such as Interstitial Lung Disease and Cystic Fibrosis.

The HDU Staff Nurse will be working in our state-of-the art facilities and able to offer HDU nursing to patients post-surgery. Some patients may require support of the following devices;

  • Cardiac output monitoring
  • Non invasive ventilation
  • Impella
  • Intra aortic balloon pump
  • Hemofiltration
  • Advanced pain relief techniques

The Post-Anaesthetic Care Unit (PACU)

PACU at the Royal Brompton site is a 10-bedded unit caring for patients of all ages post cardiac and thoracic surgery as well as invasive cardiology and offers a 24-hour Monday to Saturday service.
