Job summary

This post is a Consultant Appointment in adult Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia

and Intensive Care Medicine. The job plan of the successful candidate(s) will reflect their experience in Intensive Care and Anaesthesia as appropriate.

This is a Trust appointment and the main base is Harefield Hospital, Hill End Road, Harefield, Middlesex, UB9 6JH. The post-holder will be appointed to the service of Guy's & St Thomas's NHS Foundation Trust as a whole and may be required to work at Royal Brompton or any of the Trust's associated sites as determined by the duties of the post or as reasonably directed.

Main duties of the job

The posts are full-time posts in adult cardiothoracic anaesthesia and intensive care medicine (including providing cover for the intensive care and high dependency units). The post holders will deal with patients undergoing heart and lung transplantation and mechanical circulatory support.

Other direct clinical care including outreach, follow up clinics, pre-assessment and optimisation clinics can be negotiated within the job plan depending on the needs and wishes of the successful applicant.

An individual job plan will be negotiated based on a 10 PA overall job plan - though this is negotiable. There is a 1:8 contribution to the roster covering night and weekend duties on an on-call basis. This will cover the intensive care unit, other critical care areas, and may include anaesthesia if necessary.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Full GMC registration
  • FRCA (or equivalent)
  • FFICM (or equivalent)
  • CCT in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine (or within six months of registration at time of interview); or CCT in Anaesthesia and equivalent postgraduate education and training in adult Intensive Care Medicine
  • Training in transoesophageal and transthoracic echocardiography

Desirable

  • Higher degree (MD, PhD or equivalent)
  • Qualification in echocardiography (e.g., BSE, EAE or equivalent)

Experience

Essential

  • Adult cardiothoracic anaesthesia (including pre- and post-operative management of cardiothoracic patients)
  • Adult cardiothoracic intensive care medicine (including post-operative management of heart and lung transplantation, and management of patients requiring mechanical circulatory support)

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

Essential

  • Technical and clinical skills required for adult cardiothoracic anaesthesia and adult intensive care medicine
  • Wide knowledge of cardiac and thoracic physiology
