We are recruiting for two positions one based at St Thomas's Hospital and the other the Royal Brompton Hospital in South Kensington.

Main duties of the job

The OHN will play a key role in the day to day operational delivery of occupational health services to the Trust and commercial service users, ensuring high standards of service delivery and quality standards are met, including:

  • Fitness for work and pre-commencement health assessments
  • Sickness absence case management
  • Management of body fluid exposures
  • Infection prevention and control advice to staff
  • Contributing to policy and strategy development
  • Supporting the development and training of junior staff and students

Job responsibilities

The Occupational Health Nurse (OHN) will assist and support the Senior Occupational Health Nurse (SOHN) in the establishment of an efficient working environment, making the most effective and efficient use of staff resources.

In addition, the OHN will support the SOHN to implement local initiatives within the OHS; ensure clinics run efficiently and meet the needs of the service user group.

Act as Team Leader coordinating the day-to-day management of the clinical area, delegate duties appropriately whilst maintaining overall responsibility.

Be involved in the development, assessment and implementation of guidance, protocols and pathways to promote uniformity of service provision; act as mentor to junior Nurse Advisors.

Deputise for the SOHN in their absence; assist with line management of junior staff

Attend and participate in departmental and team meetings.

Be involved with managing local projects when required and organise own work and manage own caseload and practice, identifying and maintaining supportive networks for self and other staff members.

Essential

  • Up to date knowledge of current clinical and professional issues including NHS /DH /HSE legislation.
  • Ability to assess clients presenting to Occupational Health and to plan and provide specialist advice dependent upon their particular health care need and work related issues.
  • Supervisory experience of junior members of a team.
  • Ability to be able to decide how best to achieve expected results, whilst acting within clearly defined policies/ procedures and codes of conduct.
  • Proficient IT skills including Microsoft Office.
  • Experience of undertaking audit or nursing research.
  • Ability to organise, priorities & coordinate own work

Desirable

  • Knowledge of travel health advice and immunisations.
  • Commercial services Occupational Health provision.

Previous Experience

Essential

  • Substantial post registration experience in general nursing.
  • Substantial occupational health experience including proficient in the delivery of absence management assessment and advice, management of body fluid exposure, pre-commencement health assessment and immunity screening assessment etc.
  • Supervision of junior staff.
  • Experience of coordinating clinics and service requirements.

Desirable

  • NHS Occupational Health experience.

Qualifications / Education/ Professional Statutory Registration

Essential

  • Registered Nurse on the NMC register.
  • BSc/1st degree (health related) or equivalent qualification/training and experience.
  • Post registration qualification in, or ability to demonstrate relevant Occupational Health experience and documented competency assessments (including those currently undertaking a formal qualification in this area).
  • Evidence of ongoing professional and academic development in relevant area of speciality.

Desirable

  • SCPHN (Occupational Health Nursing) or working towards.
  • NEBOSH certificate.
  • Health Education.
  • Mentorship/Teaching Qualification.
  • Management qualification or equivalent experience.
