Job summary

Come and join us in our busy central London NHS occupational health service where we are looking for a highly motivated and committed Occupational Health Support Worker to join our dedicated team who provide a wide remit of occupational health services to the Trust's workforce and commercial contracts. You will receive training in assisting with local and national health protection and surveillance programmes, immunity screening and administrative duties.

There is one full time permanent role (37.5 hours per week).

Main duties of the job

The Occupational Support Worker will actively assist with the delivery of the Occupational Health, Safety and Wellbeing Service. The role will include undertaking a wide variety of clinical and administrative duties including venepuncture, stock and medicine management, supporting health and wellbeing initiative and undertaking health surveillance including spirometry and audiometry.

Job responsibilities

To work flexibly under the direction of the occupational health nurse (OHN) / senior occupational nurse advisor (SOHN) and public health nurse manager within a multidisciplinary occupational health team to provide a smooth and effective running of the Occupational Health, Safety and Wellbeing (OHSWB) Service

To recognise own limitations and the need for support from the multidisciplinary team when dealing with issues beyond current sphere of knowledge.

To maintain and facilitate a client centred approach to providing holistic health care and advice in line with local and Trust protocols & procedures.

At the direction of the nursing team, participate fully in the delivery of planned care, applying and evaluating advanced clinical skills which will include venepuncture, spirometry, vision screening and audiometry and undertaking administrative duties.

To provide continuity of care to clients throughout their contact with the OHSWB whenever possible.

To maintain good working relationships and effective communication with clients, colleagues, managers and other professionals across the Trust and external organisations.

To maintain appropriate accurate record keeping in line with Trust and local departmental policies and in accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and Data Protection Act (2018).

To maintain, promote and support delivery of public health initiatives working closely and in partnership with colleagues in the Trust and external agencies.

To promote and assist in the delivery of the Trust health and wellbeing programme through presentations, teaching sessions and attending organised sessions both within the Trust and at other establishments.

To adhere to universal precautions at all times. Ensure precautions to minimise the risk of cross infection and the safe disposal of clinical waste are followed at all times.

To ensure confidentiality is maintained at all times, unless there is a need to consider breaching confidentiality. In this situation inform the SOHN, matron and occupational health physician (OHP) if you identify a client that you feel their safety or that of the patients is at risk.

To carry out health surveillance of workers exposed to hazards in the workplace. This can take the form of undertaking venepuncture, spirometry, audiometry and vision screening as per departmental protocols. Refer to nursing and medical teams if necessary.

To monitor clinical stock and vaccinations.

To support the delivery of the annual seasonal flu immunisation programme for Trust staff.

Recognise and respond appropriately to urgent and emergency situations.
