Job summary
Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust is a leading center for patients with complex multisystem diseases. We are looking for an enthusiastic, dynamic and experienced registered paediatric or learning disabilities nurse with a passion for transition and improving the quality of life for young people with complex needs.
The post is part of a centrally funded National Highly Specialist Service for patients who have a rare genetic disorder known as Bardet-Biedl Syndrome (BBS), a multisystem progressive disorder affecting vision, learning and associated with obesity as well as renal and endocrine disorders.
The National BBS Service funded by NHSE is now in its 13th year and continues to grow in calibre and in the delivery of novel service delivery pathways in close partnership with the BBS Support group (BBS UK) who are an integral part of the service. We have seen a significant increase in our workload as direct result of improved genetic diagnosis and the enhanced need for specialist care.
Monthly clinics are held at the Rare Disease Centre (RDC) at St Thomas. In addition to the face to face clinics, we also hold regular Telemedicine clinics to see patients selectively triaged who are well enough to be seen remotely prior to seeing them in the face-to-face MDT service. The service aims to provide a multidisciplinary approach jointly managing all patients in the South West and South East in partnership with their local Consultants and care teams facilitated by a Nurse-led Outreach Network.
Closing date: 17th September 2023
Interview date: 27th Sept 2023
Main duties of the job
This is a new substantive post, based at GSTT, to join an existing part-time Nurse Specialist for the Transition and Adult clinics at St Thomas Hospital and with the aim of working cross-site supporting the Paediatric Bardet-Biedl service at Great Ormond Street following a period of training.
This role is well suited to a motivated, organised individual wishing to develop his/her specialist skills and manage a cohort of patients with complex multisystem disorder. This role will be well suited to someone who can be flexible and accommodating whilst supporting families to manage the day to day aspects of their conditions. You will need excellent interpersonal, communication and strong patient advocacy skills in order to build and maintain relationships with patients, families and local community and clinical teams.
This role will enable you expand your professional and personal boundaries, enhance autonomous and expert clinical practice, leadership and evidence based practice whilst being part of a dedicated and multidisciplinary clinical team in supporting complex decision making and improving outcomes for patients
Due to the rare nature of these conditions we do not expect that the successful applicant will have experience of BBS.
This post will provide an ideal opportunity to consolidate clinical, research, management and leadership skills whilst facilitating effective care and support to this patient group. The post-holder will have a unique opportunity to further develop and shape this aspect of national service.
Experience of working autonomously and/or nursing within a community setting is essential to undertake this role.
