Job summary

The post holder will work within a multi-disciplinary team to support the provision of the ophthalmology service including clinics and theatres, and contribute to the development overall of the ophthalmology service.

The post timetable consists of working in Cornea, General and Cataract clinics.

Main duties of the job

To be able to work autonomously in clinics, to assess patients referred to the Corneal, Anterior segment, Cataract and General clinics and offer an expert opinion with support from the Consultant Ophthalmologists in these specialties.

To undertake a comprehensive ophthalmic examination including, Goldmann tonometry, corneal/anterior segment/lens slit-lamp biomicroscopy, corneal pachymetry, gonioscopy and optic disc and fundus examination to ascertain an anterior segment diagnosis and assess stability of the condition.

To prescribe specific licensed medicines for conditions affecting the eye,and the tissues surrounding the eye, within your recognised area of expertise, competence and professional registration.

The post holder will be expected to assess, diagnose, formulate and review treatment plans as well as make assessments on the need for surgery ensuring patients understand the risks and benefits.

Qualifications/ Education

Essential

  • To possess an Optometric degree
  • To be registered with the General Optical Council
  • Independent prescribing qualification
  • Post-graduate qualification and specialist training in a relevant field

Desirable

  • Knowledge of GSTT electronic notes systems; Openeyes/ Epic/ Medchart
  • OPT- cataract level 3

Clinical experience

Essential

  • Previous clinical experience in ophthalmology including training in cataract, cornea & general ophthalmology
  • 4 postgraduate years or equivalent experience

Desirable

  • Experience of training and supporting junior staff, staff and students
  • Previous experience of performing laser procedures

Skills/ Knowledge/ Ability

Essential

  • Have significant clinical expertise in ophthalmology to provide an expert opinion in assessing, diagnosing and managing highly complex corneal patients
  • To be able to work as part of a multidisciplinary team or independently

Desirable

  • To have knowledge of research methodology and be willing to contribute to research and clinical trials within the department
