Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated and enthusiastic Clinical Research Fellow to join the Cardiology research team at Harefield Hospital. This is a new position aimed at supporting work on established research projects and original research, leading to an MD/PhD for the applicant.
The post will be for 9 months in the first instance, part time for three days a week pro-rata at the ST1 pay-scale with a fixed term contract of £19,089 commencing 1st September 2023.
The post is part-time for 9 months in the first instance however the successful candidate will be expected to secure grant funding and encouraged to register for a Higher Degree (postgraduate MD or PhD), undertaking novel, investigator initiated clinical cardiology research.
The successful applicant will be given training and expected to undertake clinical research based in the Cardiology Department, under the close supervision of Dr Miles Dalby and cardiology consultant colleagues.

Main duties of the job
There will be 2 main aspects to the post:
(1) original, investigator-initiated research that the successful applicant will undertake, for which the successful candidate will encouraged to register for a higher degree (MD or PhD) (2) recruitment into other departmental single or multi-centre clinical research trials
The candidate will be supervised by Dr Miles Dalby, Professor Thomas Luscher and Dr Chiara Bucciarelli-Ducci. This will involve submitting projects to the Ethics and regulatory committees, recruiting patients, data entry, data analysis and writing up results. There will be potential for development of collaborative research projects with other investigators and departments. The original research is expected to lead to abstracts and publications.

- The post holder will be provided with GCP (Good Clinical Practice) training in research principles and practice and will be expected to work within this framework.
- The post holder will be given training on each project and will be responsible for day-to-day running of clinical research projects, in particular for patient recruitment, enrolment, follow-up and data entry.
- The post holder will work closely with the cardiac research nurses, other cardiology research fellows, and cardiology consultants acting as principal investigators
- The post holder will work closely with clinical care team and allied health care professionals as necessary for the clinical care of research participants
- The post holder will be expected to work closely with the clinical research leads to design new clinical research projects, obtain permission for clinical trials from local Ethics Committee and other regulatory bodies, and write up results.
- The post holder will be expected to develop statistical and writing skills required for academic publications.
- Occasional clinical sessions to cover clinic or other clinical cardiology commitments commensurate with training may, from time to time, under supervision, be required.
- No regular on call commitment is expected but ad hoc on calls can be considered by mutual agreement.
The successful candidate should demonstrate a strong interest in cardiology and an interest in cardiology research.
Good communication and interpersonal skills are essential, as is evidence of continued professional development. A full training and induction programme will be provided to familiarize the successful candidate with departmental policies and procedures.
