Job summary

This post is to cover maternity leave within the Digital Midwife team. We are introducing a new electronic health record (EHR), powered by Epic, to help us transform the way we deliver care and empower our patients to get more involved in decisions about their health. It will replace many of the systems we currently use with a single, Trust-wide, integrated, comprehensive programme.

This is an exciting opportunity to be involved in a large transformation project - the most ambitious programme of clinical pathway transformation the Trust have undertaken.

Main duties of the job

Key duties

  • To work in accordance with the NMC Rules and Code for nurses and midwives
  • To be responsible for the provision of a high quality, woman centred midwifery service for the Trust, in line with the national and Trust standards
  • Working towards the ambitions of Better Births evaluate the maternity IT system and its ability, as an enabler, to meet the recommendations to drive up patient safety
  • To work with the multidisciplinary team to continually monitor the quality of data recorded on the maternity IT system
  • To identify areas for improvement and to take a lead role in designing, implementing and supporting new and existing initiatives
  • Provide professional leadership including motivation of staff regarding the use of digital technology.
  • Represent the trust on the National Maternity user group and the NHS Digital Midwives Expert forum group
  • Provide effective communication with the Digital Lead for the Local Maternity Neonatal System (LMNS)
  • Help lead the role out of the new EHR and support staff through the change.
  • Be a Digital Champion which involves supporting training, providing at-the-elbow support throughout maternity (particularly around the go-live period) and reinforce new workflows and prioritise issues for resolution.

The birth centres are supported by the busiest antenatal day unit in London, an obstetric high dependency unit and an active ultrasound and fetal medicine unit. Antenatal care is provided in both the hospital and across around 23 sites in the community.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The post holder will be a registered midwife with clinical expertise.

The purpose of this role is to lead on supporting the use of digital technology in maternity and to play a key role in the development of this service.

The post holder will be responsible for ensuring that clinical practice, supported by digital technology meets professional standards. This will be done through the provision of clinical expertise, professional direction and leadership.

The post holder will be responsible for the day to day system administration of the Maternity Information System as well as monitoring the quality of data within the maternity EHR. They will be responsible for identifying areas for improvement and leading on the implementation of improvement plans.

The post holder will help champion the use of the Maternity data set to inform change across the network and will work with the key stakeholders to maximise it's purpose.

Communication

Maintain a high profile in the clinical area and be accessible to all staff

Develop and maintain communication channels, engaging all roles within the service and ensure regular updates are provided

Ensure timely notification to service leads / help desk when there is a loss of service availability and highlighting the critical nature and areas affected

Demonstrate effective interpersonal skills when dealing with all levels of staff across the trust and be able to challenge senior staff around pathway performance

Ensure Service User engagement during the development and implementation and review of the maternity digital technology

To be aware of national initiatives and strategies and feed these into local maternity service development

Work with the coding department to ensure the Maternity IT System captures relevant activity to support coding

Quality

Understand and act as a champion for the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR)

Investigate clinical incident reports, complaints and concerns relating to and in association with the maternity IT system

Ensure staff have the ability to maintain contemporaneous record in line with the Clinical Negligence scheme for Trusts (CNST) and professional standards

Using data populated / collected by the maternity IT system reporting functionality, contribute towards the monitoring of key performance indicators (KPIs) using the local maternity dashboard

Will be required to manage significant risks and issues to ensure clinical safety and patient care is not affected by system development issues

Be accountable for the implementation of new functionality ensuring safe implementation to include user acceptance testing

Responsible for the sustainability of the system and interfaces, including support and also identify any redesign / development work required to maximise the functionality of the maternity IT system

Participate in the development of policies, protocols and clinical guidelines in support of the specialist service.

Bring to the immediate attention of the Digital Matron and Chief Midwife, issues which may impede the provision of an efficient or high quality service

Provide a business continuity plan to support system failure and ensure that staff are fully aware of the plan, reviewing and updating it annually and when changes are required

Management and leadership

Be a visible leader who is accessible to all staff

Maintain skills and knowledge in clinical midwifery practice.

Frequent contact not only with clinicians but with system suppliers and other clinical disciplines

Accountable for the implementation of new functionality ensuring safe implementation

Appropriate dissemination of changes to relevant staff in a robustly tested and organised manner

Continual assessment, review, audit and testing of functionality of the Maternity IT System

Provide support day to day for users diagnosing and remedying errors in a timely manner in collaboration with the IT department helpdesk and system suppliers

Ensure all babies born receive an NHS Number, retrieve those that fail and escalate accordingly

Maintain the maternity IT system to ensure accurate and timely statistics are produced for the service, ad hoc national audits and for statutory returns through liaison with the IT department and senior midwifery colleague

Help plan and implement the Maternity Digital Strategy to develop the digital maturity within the maternity service

Organise own work, identifying and maintaining supportive networks for self and other staff members.
