Department Information
The Thrombosis and Thrombophilia team
Due to an escalating referral rate this team is rapidly expanding to accommodate increasing patient numbers. A significant proportion of the workload results from tertiary referral of patients with thrombotic disorders from South-East England and elsewhere, as befits the function of an internationally recognised Centre for Thrombosis and Haemostasis. The Centre also provides advisory and consultative services for the Trust and other teaching and district general hospitals, including Anticoagulant control, advice on the management of high-risk cases prone to thrombosis (e.g. during pregnancy), and the management of acquired bleeding disorders. The Centre staffs and organise the Thrombosis/Thrombophilia clinics on both the Guys and St. Thomass sites.
Currently there is a registry of patients with complex thrombotic disease from all over the UK. These patients have access to the team by a hot line, clinics and walk-in facility. They often phone or e mail and as their care is often delivered locally, conversations with their local surgeons, obstetricians and General Practitioners are common. Clinics are held on four days a week, Dr Susan Robinson cares for those with inherited thrombophilias during pregnancy, and those with antiphospholipid antibodies are cared for in an antiphospholipid pregnancy clinic. The clinics are being separated into a young persons/teenage clinic, antiphospholipid clinics, inherited thrombophilia clinics and a general thrombosis clinic. The current team includes Prof Beverley Hunt, Dr Karen Breen, Dr Pu Lin Luo, Dr Uzma Faruqi, Dr Anicee Danaee, and Dr Gerry Dolan. Dr Anders Cohen and a Clinical Research Fellow (this post) and a rotating Haematology SpR. There are also two Thrombosis Clinical Nurse Specialists and a Research Clinical Nurse Specialist. We also utilise the nursing staff within the Haemophilia and Thrombosis Unit at St Thomas and nursing staff on the Haematology Day Ward at Guys. They are supported by secretarial and clerical time and data manager. We also have additional Research Fellows from Overseas present.
Currently clinics occur in the Haemophilia and Thrombosis centre. Many patients are referred in for surgery and the team has close links with the GSTT Vascular Surgery team, gynaecologists and general surgeons, many of whom have become adept at operating on patients with complex thrombotic problems. The Thrombosis and Thrombophilia team are also responsible for delivery of the targets related to prevention of hospital-acquired VTE and to take on the managerial responsibility of the management of acute VTE.
