Job summary

Blundell Ward is a 23 bedded Head and Neck / ENT ward comprising of 4 bays and 4 side rooms. Blundell ward is an excellent place to develop your Surgical, ENT and Head and Neck skills.

The ward admits and looks after patients having elective surgery under Head & Neck, ENT as well as emergency admissions from clinic and A&E across Oncology and Haematology. We care for patients who have had complex head and neck surgery and often have difficult airways. Blundell is a great place to learn the skills to care for this patient group and be exposed to comprehensive in house training and education.

Please note: We do not currently deliver chemotherapy on Blundell ward and therefore this is not a learning opportunity we can offer. We do however support patients through their treatment and associated side effects.

Main duties of the job

The clinical environment offers the opportunity to learn and practice a wide range of skills across a very varied caseload of patients with the support of an experienced multi-specialty nursing team.

The ward offers an internal specific competency programme, 5 study days per year and a link role to which specific study days and learning opportunities are available. The senior nursing team are very supportive and friendly and will encourage you to develop your nursing and leadership skills.

The wards encompass the Trusts objectives and standards of care and staff are very passionate at maintaining these standards and are always looking at ways to better patient experience. The ward has excellent patient feedback and the nurses are very proud of the care that is delivered.

Independently manage a group of patients within the specialty whilstworking as part of the multidisciplinary team, delivering individualised andpersonalised direct patient care

Is wholly accountable for his / her practice in line with the NMC code of professional conduct and takes every reasonable opportunity to sustain and improve his / her knowledge and professional competence.

To be an effective communicator with patients/carers/families regarding disease treatment and management.

Demonstrate appropriate practice and specialist advice in the assessment,planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care. This includeshistory taking, physical examination and the requesting of agreeddiagnostic procedures/clinical investigations.

Undertake prescribed physical observations as follows: blood pressure, temperature, respirations, blood sugars, urinalysis, weight and height, drain monitoring including measurement and report exceptions appropriates.

Responsible for the correct administration of prescribed medication via oral, enteral and IV routes including transfusion of blood and blood products

Be responsible for assessing and recognising emergencies in thespecialty. To interpret information and take appropriate action and to leadothers to do the same.

Work alongside the multi-disciplinary team to ascertain treatments and advise on nursing priorities.

Ensure safe and effective care for complex patients requiring advance clinical skills and responsible for carrying out specialist nursing procedures to area.

Complete evidenced based interventions including enteral feeding line care, IV line care, complex dressings and wound management, pre and post-operative care relevant to specialties.
