Production Technician – Radiopharmacy

Job summary

The Radiopharmacy forms part of the Nuclear Medicine department which relies on close working relationships between a number of different staff groups including scientists, pharmacy technicians, imaging technologists, physicists and clinicians.

The post holder will work closely with all of the members of the Radiopharmacy team particularly the Chief Technician and will regularly work in collaboration with Medical Physics, Nuclear Medicine and Pharmacy staff.

Main duties of the job

The Radiopharmacy operates between the hours of 6am and 5pm and the post holder will be expected to take part in a staff rotation to provide cover over these hours though some flexibility is possible for the right candidate. The post holder will be involved in the manufacture of radiopharmaceuticals and radiolabelled cells as well as having a patient facing role in support of the busy GFR service. Experience within a Radiopharmacy or Nuclear Medicine environment. A strong work ethic, and a good grasp of mathematics and English are essential. Candidates may be given the opportunity to undertake a formal apprenticeship including an NVQ qualification or Foundation degree if they have shown the aptitude during their initial training period.

Duties and Responsibilities
  1. To prepare and dispense radiopharmaceuticals and radiolabelled blood components.
  2. To package radiopharmaceuticals for dispatch to other hospitals.
  3. To perform routine in-vitro radionuclide investigations under the direction of the Chief Radiopharmacy Technician.
  4. To maintain a high standard of cleanliness in the radiopharmacy and to ensure records of the cleaning process are maintained and up to date. To undertake cleaning and monitoring of the isolators according to procedures and document work undertaken.
  5. To ensure correct use and maintenance of equipment in the radiopharmacy in a safe and satisfactory condition by following the procedures for use and ensuring records of maintenance are kept up to date.
  6. To undertake media validation to ensure ongoing validation of aseptic competence.
  7. To undertake sessional environmental monitoring for dispensing and blood labelling following the procedures laid down between the radiopharmacy unit and the quality assurance department.
  8. To be responsible for ensuring all clean room clothing is processed correctly and in a timely way. To ensure the clothing is packed, left for collection and picked up following the procedure.
  9. To ensure safe disposal of radioactive, non-radioactive and biological waste.
  10. To perform daily radiation monitoring to ensure a safe radiopharmacy is maintained at all times and to keep records as defined in the radiopharmacy SOPs. To inform the Chief Technologist or Radiation Protection Supervisor in the event of a radioactive spillage.
  11. To ensure the correct filing and processing of all documentation associated with the aseptic unit.
  12. To work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to ensure the provision of the highest possible Nuclear Medicine service.
Finance/stock control
  1. To assist in the purchase of radioisotopes, cold kits, related pharmaceuticals, and other items. To maintain records of all materials purchased, dispensed, and dispatched within the Nuclear Medicine Directorate.
  2. To be responsible for maintaining adequate stocks of materials required for preparation work and to replenish stocks from appropriate suppliers and ensure their correct usage.
Education / training / supervision
  1. To attend courses and undertake training as directed by the Chief Radiopharmacy Technician. To undertake continuing professional development (CPD).
  2. To supervise, under the direction of the Chief Radiopharmacy Technician and Senior Radioscientist, students and other staff to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the radiopharmacy.
  3. To be involved in the training and supervision of new radiopharmacy staff, visitors and students under the supervision of the Chief Radiopharmacy Technician and Senior Radioscientist
  4. To become familiar with the computer system as required to operate the radiopharmacy.
  5. To line-manage support workers within the radiopharmacy

  • NVQ Pharmacy services Level 3 plus accredited underpinning knowledge (BTEC in Pharmaceutical Sciences or equivalent) or equivalent plus Professional registration as a Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council OR Completion of Science Manufacturing Technician Level 3 apprenticeship OR Academic qualification (at least BSc) related to medicines for Human Use plus substantial experience working in a GMP-compliant facility preparing/manufacturing medicines for Human Use. This includes experience performing: o Aseptic Manipulations o Assembly of starting materials o Environmental monitoring o In-process checking o Preparation of production documentation
