Job summary
This role is an exciting new opportunity to develop a psychology service within the Lane Fox Service, a specialised weaning and home ventilation service which provides care at a local, regional and national level. Funding has been secured to provide a dedicated service to this complex patient group with documented high need for psychological support.
The post holder will work with patients across two in-patient units, based at St Thomas's and East Surrey Hospital, as well as an out-patient service supporting patients and their families.
Main duties of the job
The service runs a specialist respiratory high dependency unit which delivers care to patients with weaning failure, leading them to remain on ventilators following periods within critical care. The post-holder will work with our multi-disciplinary team, including Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapists.
The successful candidate will help support the therapies team in goal setting for rehabilitation which is the cornerstone to recovery for this patient group.
In addition to the weaning service the Lane Fox unit provides care for patients with chronic respiratory failure from a range of other disease and the post-holder will work with patients with COPD, Obesity and progressive neuro-muscular diseases, such as MND, to support advance care planning, symptom management, anxiety, sleep issues, weight loss and decision making around alternative feeding.
As part of the out-patient role the post holder will support the post-polio syndrome (PPS) self-management course. This unique service supports patients with PPS via a residential 5 day course and runs 2 to 3 times per year.

The Lane Fox Respiratory Service is a nationally and internationally recognised centre for the provision of long-term ventilatory support. It comprises a 14-bed unit located in St Thomas' Hospital and a 20 bed unit in the Lane Fox REMEO centre in Redhill. In addition, there is a Lane Fox Clinical Respiratory Physiology Research Centre, Seminar Room, Outpatient Suite and dedicated Technical, Reception and Secretarial support. The unit was modernised in 2019.
The Lane Fox Unit at St. Thomas' and The Lane Fox REMEO centre at Redhill, Surrey, is part of the extensive critical care services at GSTT. This consists of over 120 critical care beds.

- To work as an independent and autonomous professional within BPS and HCPC guidelines and the policies and procedures of the service, taking full responsibility for own work including treatment and discharge decisions.
- To work autonomously developing pathways for psychology across the Lane Fox Service and the wider directorate (PACCS) engaging with multidisciplinary teams within and across services and directorate when appropriate.
