Job summary

The HCAI managing epidemiologist is responsible for managing the epidemiology branch of the surveillance and epidemiology unit (SIU), which includes:

  • Management of the epidemiology team (currently B6 Epidemiologist)
  • Writing reports and narratives for regular IPC related outputs
  • Supporting the SSI arm of the SIU with data related tasks (one day a week minimum)
  • Database and dashboard management
  • Research related activities
  • Ad hoc epidemiology and data related requests

Key Aims

  • Manage the epidemiology branch of the SIU to provide accurate, timely and comprehensive information to support IPC clinical services and core requirements of internal and external stakeholders. Main internal stakeholders are IPC nursing and medical teams, intravenous line team, decontamination and antimicrobial pharmacy. Main external stakeholders are Clinical Groups, individual Directorates, and corporate services, and responding to external requests for information (e.g. from CQC and Freedom of Information requests).
  • To collaborate on applied HCAI applied research projects, focussing on:
    • Realising clinical and organisational benefit of novel diagnostic tools such as rapid point-of-care diagnostics, pathogen genome sequencing or decision support/AI technologies.
    • Realising benefits from improvements in IPC practice or behavioural change interventions.

Main duties of the job

  • To write and contribute to reports that will be used by others in the development of policies and services to meet the organisation's priorities.

  • To produce, collate, and present data on HCAI incidence, antimicrobial resistance and antibiotic usage and develop visualisation systems that can be used to inform and educate staff across the Trust.
  • To write and contribute to reports that will be used by others in the development of policies and services to meet the organisations priorities.
  • Have a number of projects underway at the same time, requiring the post holder to plan and organise their own time according to deadlines.
  • The post holder is required to have a high level of understanding of how to work, store and transmit data in accordance with data protection, Caldicott Guardianship, freedom of information systems and confidentiality principles.
  • To be familiar with the concepts of Clinical Microbiology and Infection Prevention and Control and the working of the Directorate by observations, training and appropriate reading.
  • Present complex epidemiological information to a variety of audiences which will include both those with and without an understanding of statistical techniques.

Leadership

  • Represent the Trust across the different sectors of the NHS, working closely with partner organisations and external bodies to institute integrated working in the best interests of patient care.
  • Ensure that the DIPC, IPC leadership team, and speciality leads are updated on the status of the programmes of work in the department at regular intervals.

Management

  • The post holder will be expected to manage the Epidemiology arm of the SIU.
  • The post holder will work closely with staff at the Royal Brompton and Harefield sites involved in HCAI epidemiology.
  • Train other staff in epidemiological analyses.

Delivery Plan

  • To contribute to the development and implementation of the IPC work plan, demonstrating commitment to the on-going improvement in patient safety, including cross Directorate and external partnership working.

Resources

  • To appropriately utilise the revenue budgets as required ensuring expenditure and income is within financial plans and budget and to ensure compliance with the Trusts Standing Financial Instructions.
  • To be a signatory for designated budgets where appropriate.

Performance

  • To work in partnership with directorates and clinical leaders to monitor performance of infection prevention standards, Trust wide.
  • To ensure that performance monitoring tools are developed and implemented Trust wide in relation to staff competence and standards of practice.
