Job summary
Research
This post is aimed at post-FRCA trainees who are interested in gaining skills, experience and academic outputs in anaesthesia and perioperative medicine research. Fellows can expect to be involved in various stages of the clinical research process, from study conception and design, through to eventual publication. There will also be ample opportunity to develop non-clinical research skills, including partaking in systematic reviews, contributing to Delphi analyses, gaining basic data analysis and statistical programming skills, and exploring different aspects of the editorial process. There might also be an opportunity to undertake a higher degree, which may be supported. This research fellowship aims to fulfil the requirements to achieve Advanced Level Academic and Research Training, and activities will be mapped to this curriculum. Fellows in training will be supported in seeking approval for an OOPE or OOPR for this post.
Clinical
Clinical duties will be an on-call commitments on an appropriate rota for the fellow's experiences. These are likely to be senior registrar on calls at St Thomas' (0153) or Guy's (1049), obstetrics on calls at St Thomas' (0674), or a combination. In general, fellows will undertake two weeks of full-time research followed by two weeks of on-call commitments.
Main duties of the job
Fellows will be expected to accomplish a number of the following, including but not limited to:
- Design of clinical and non-clinical research studies
- Submission of a study for ethical approval
- Application for research grant funding
- Contribution to the conduct of screening, recruitment, retention to clinical trials
- Authorship and submission of manuscripts for peer-reviewed publication.
Fellows will also be expected to participate in the administration of research activities in the department, including but not limited to:
- Chairing of departmental journal club meetings
- Coordination of monthly departmental research meetings
- Organisation of research skills courses for internal and external participants.

Guys and St Thomas NHS foundation trust is a leading teaching hospital in London that provides tertiary and specialist care services for most specialities including cardiothoracic and vascular, airway, ENT/maxillofacial, paediatrics, women's health, renal, cancer, gastrointestinal, plastics and orthopaedics. The Anaesthetic department forms part of the new TAP directorate, which includes over 100 consultants and 600 nursing staff covering the adult perioperative pathway within the Trust. TAP has expanded since formation in 2018 and has already received notable achievements in research and innovation.
The department has a strong reputation for leadership at a national and international level. Consultants with external roles include: Dr Amit Pawa; President of Regional Anaesthesia UK, Dr Imran Ahmad; Secretary, Difficult Airway Society; Dr Claire Shannon and Dr Claire Mallinson; Royal College of Anaesthetists Council Members, Kariem El-Boghdadly and Craig Bailey; Editorial Team, Anaesthesia and Ramai Santhirapala; Academy of Medical Royal Colleges/Centre of Perioperative Care. These work alongside a dynamic team working within the Directorate to cover clinical, governance, innovation and educational remits. The directorate has collaborated with intensive care in formulating a surge response to the recent COVID-19 pandemic.

Mutual Obligation to Monitor Hours
There is a contractual obligation on employers to monitor working hours through robust local monitoring arrangements supported by national guidance, and on individual doctors to co-operate with those monitoring arrangements.
European Working Time Directive (EWTD) & New Junior Doctor Contract
All posts and working patterns are under constant review in line with EWTD guidelines and New Junior Doctors Contract.
Educational Programme
Neither the London Deanery nor the Royal College accredits this post for postgraduate training. However the postholder will be expected to attend and contribute to educational activities e.g. departmental meetings, x-ray meetings, pathology meetings, multidisciplinary meetings, journal clubs etc.
