Job summary
These posts are suitable for anaesthetists who have finished their training and want further experience in a sub-specialty area. They provide an ideal transition from trainee to consultant, with the posts allowing service provision at consultant level as well as advanced specialist training.
The successful applicant will spend a minimum of half job-planned time per week in their specialty area of interest. This time will be divided into clinical work allied to the fellowship of interest with the option of some of the time spent developing research education and teaching allied to the specialist area. The remaining half of their job planned time would be to provide anaesthesia at consultant level, or on an appropriate trainee on call rota. Post-holders may be asked to cover on calls, but this would be agreed upon locally and would be associated with appropriate remuneration.
Posts are due to commence from any time from August 2023 up until August 2024, for a period of 6 months in the first instance, renewable up to 1 year. The post-holder will work only within the Guy's and St. Thomas' Hospital NHS Foundation Trust but may be asked to cover additional lists at the high-volume, low-complexity hub at the Queen Mary's Hospital, Sidcup satellite site.
Interested candidates can contact Dr Imran Ahmad, Deputy Clinical Director, and Airway Fellowship Lead or Professor Kariem El-Boghdadly, Clinical Service Lead for Guy's Hospital and Professor in Anaesthesia.
Main duties of the job
Sub-speciality area:
The post holder will usually spend two days undertaking specialty-directed practice in Airway Management. Depending on experience, they will be either under direct or indirect supervision by their clinical supervisor. This work will also include research, audit and management projects outside the theatre environment.
Airway:
The majority of difficult airway management occurs on the Guy's site. There is already a well-established pre-CCT airway programme for advanced trainees involving complex head and neck cases and advanced airway techniques. The complex cases involve max-fax and head and neck ENT.
The candidate will be able to add to this work by contributing to running lists independently, learning techniques including the whole range of intubation techniques, jet ventilation and the use of 'THRIVE' oxygenation of anticipated difficult airways. There is an opportunity to attend MDT and ENT clinics.
There is an education programme along with an internationally renowned external course run by the department, which has gained a wide reputation. The candidate would be expected to add to this programme.
The department has been very productive in terms of original research and case reports. Facilitation would be provided for the candidate to set up and contribute to projects.
