Job summary

Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust (GSTT) and Royal Brompton Hospital (RBH) are seeking highly-motivated and dynamic critical care nurses or AHPs to join our ACCP programme. This is an exciting opportunity to be among the first ACCP trainees to join GSTT, working closely with an established ACCP team at the RBH to continue to develop a blended workforce within critical care.

This is a two-year supernumerary post which is fully aligned to the Faculty of Intensive Care (FICM) competency framework, with the academic component delivered by Anglia Ruskin University. Training will be delivered collaboratively across the organisation, and there will be opportunity for clinical rotation.

Successful candidates should be able to adapt to the pressures of a changing clinical environment, form strong working relationships within the multi-disciplinary team and champion the ongoing development of the ACCP agenda. Fundamental to this role is ensuring that as a practitioner, you are aligned with the Trust's core values.

Applicants for this role should also be aware that this is a trainee position within GSTT/RBH and you may be placed at either site. At the end of your training, your permanent ACCP role will be the named trust you were originally appointed to. Main duties of the job

  • To work at a high level of advanced practice, providing clinical expertise
  • To provide professional leadership and support within a multi-professional team
  • To cover a 24hr, 7 day service including a combination of long days, nights and weekend shifts.
  • To act as a senior role model within critical care
  • To contribute to the development of the ACCP role within Critical Care and the Trust.
  • To work across organisational departments, policies, and professional boundaries to improve the quality of patient care for critically ill patients.
  • To enhance continuity of patient care.

Job responsibilities

This post is aimed at developing new ways of working within critical care in a senior clinical position as an Advanced Critical Care Practitioner (ACCP) within critical care. With mentor support, the ACCP will integrate into the existing critical care team on the medical rota to carry out extended roles within the critical care unit which will include initial assessment, management, and care of level 1-3 patients, including practical procedures.

Trainee ACCPs will act as a highly specialised role model and leader for all members of staff and play a major role in the continuous development of the services within the Trust and as a potential member of a range of trust quality/process improvement project groups.

Appointed trainees ACCP will have a nominated Adult Intensive Care Unit and Consultant Educational Supervisor and follow the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine (FICM) Advanced Critical Care Practitioner (ACCP) competency-based training program. Trainees ACCP will be expected to complete MSc in Advanced Critical Practice by an accredited High Education Institution (HEI). Progression into an ACCP role post training will be subject to satisfactory completion of the ACCP program including achievement of a Postgraduate Diploma or masters degree, registration with the FICM ACCP program. At all times the post holder is required to be accountable for their own actions, to use their initiative and act independently.

The trainee ACCP will be responsible for their own continuing professional development and for contributing towards the continuing professional development and performance of the Critical Care team. As a member of the Adult Intensive Care unit senior team the trainees ACCP will play a role in the continuous development of the Trust and contribute towards a range of Trust quality/process improvement projects.
