Job summary

Are you interested in joining a tertiary cardio-thoracic centre as part of a friendly, hard working team? At the Brompton we can offer you the chance to grow your clinical and leadership skills, treating an interesting and diverse caseload of patients including cardio-thoracic surgery, SARF and ECMO ITU patients, cardiology and patients with adult congenital heart disease.

We are seeking an individual who is committed to growing both themselves and the team around them and has proven experience in treating cardiothoracic and ITU patients to a high level.

You will be supported by a Band 8a therapy team lead and a clinical specialist and contribute to the management of a team including Band 6,5 and 4 therapists.

You will need good organisational and communication skills, and the ability to work as a member of a team. There is regular supervision, training and support from highly skilled senior colleagues to manage learning needs and you will be expected to work closely with the other members of the MDT. There are excellent opportunities for CPD and team members are encouraged to attend and present at national and international conferences, in addition attendance at both internal and external teaching and courses is encouraged and supported.

Main duties of the job

  • Undertake a high specialist team leader role alongside the heart therapy lead in planning, co-ordinating, delivering and evaluating the Physiotherapy service provided in particular to the cardiothoracic/ cardiology wards and ITU on a day to day basis.
  • To take a lead role in the advanced assessment and treatment of patients within the speciality who may have highly complex needs, and to determine clinical diagnosis and physiotherapy treatment indicated, maintain records as an autonomous practitioner.
  • To be responsible for the supervision of junior team members within the cardiothoracic/cardiology physiotherapy team.
  • To be responsible for the continuing professional development and overall performance of all physiotherapy staff in the cardiothoracic / cardiology service

Patient / customer care (both direct and indirect)

1.1 To be professionally and legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of your own work including the management of patients in your care. To ensure a high standard of clinical care for the patients under your management and support more junior staff to do likewise on a daily basis.

1.6 This role will require staff to work in a variety of clinical areas including intensive care and other critical care areas, operating theatres and recovery, and wards.

1.7 At times staff may facilitate transfers between sites/ other trusts of critically ill patients on non-invasive ventilation, through the competent use of the machine and battery pack.

1.8 To be responsible for the training of staff in the care of hospital patients from basic to complex including terminally ill patients.

1.9 To accept clinical responsibility for a designated caseload of patients, and to organise this effectively and efficiently with regard to clinical priorities and use of time.

1.17 To be an active member of the overnight and weekend on call service, and to provide specialist advice on a daily basis to other on-call staff regarding all aspects of cardiorespiratory physiotherapy but highly specialist advice in cardiothoracic surgery/cardiology.

1.18 To be responsible for a designated area of work within the cardiothoracic / cardiology wards in conjunction with the Heart Therapy Lead.
