Oncology Rotation Nurse

Job summary
We are launching an exciting new rotation programme in Oncology for Band 5 nurses. The programme is for 18 months and will involve a rotation around 3 clinical areas. In addition to this each candidate will be supported by a Senior Buddy (Head of Nursing, Nurse Consultant or Matron) to ensure that they have the opportunity to discuss their development.
As part of the programme each candidate will complete the following courses:
- Essentials of Cancer Care
- Acute Oncology Course
- Compassionate Communication in Cancer Care
- SACT Course
These would give each candidate 30 credits at Level 6 or 7 at KCL.

Main duties of the job
The 3 areas are:
Inpatient Ward:Hedley Atkins is a 24 bedded ward that predominantly cares for patients with cancer including those receiving active treatment, palliative and end of life care. The nursing team prides itself on a cohesive multidisciplinary approach to patient care, striving to provide high clinical standards in a supportive environment. There will also be the opportunity to spend time on other wards in the directorate and gain wider experience.
Outpatients:The Outpatient Village at Guy's Cancer Centre is a unit providing specialist treatment to oncology patients at every stage of their journey. The nursing team provides an essential support to the patient experience and to the clinicians involved. The nursing team prides itself on a cohesive multidisciplinary approach to patient care, striving to provide high clinical standards in a supportive environment. The unit is fast paced and challenging and we are looking for a dynamic band 6 to contribute to maintaining high standards of care and to support in leading the nursing team.
CDU:
The Chemotherapy Day Unit is across 2 sites - Guys Cancer & Queen Marys, Sidcup. The units treat a total of over 120 patients per day. Main duties of the job involves day to day administration of SACT and supportive therapies including intravenous, sub-cutaneous and oral handouts. Each candidate would complete the SACT course and be supported to get signed off as chemotherapy competent on the unit.

During the rotation programme each candidate would have the opportunity to shadow the Nurse Consultant for Chemotherapy and the Advanced Nurse Practitioner for Chemotherapy.
During the rotation programme each candidate will be given the opportunity to work with the team and the Practice Development Nurses to look at Quality Improvement projects in each area. This will enable them to look at evidence to change practice and improve patient care.
Following the completion of the rotation programme we would ensure there are band 6 opportunities for each candidate. We would then continue to support each candidate to develop as a band 6 and present a poster on a Quality Improvement project at UKONS. There would be ongoing support and professional development.
